Welcome to the College Algebra Online Class!

I am delighted that you have enrolled in my section and I hope that you have a great academic term!

Instruction in this course does not involve classroom lectures. You will learn the course math contents by using your textbook and other math resources that I will provide you throughout the term. This class will require time management and self motivation from you. I will facilitate your learning by helping you throughout the term.

This online course is challenging and time consuming. Keep in mind that this course is more convenient, but it is not easier because it is online. This method of delivery is not intended for everyone. Only highly motivated, highly discipline, and highly organized students that can read the book and can learn the material by themselves, with the instructor's guidance, are successful in this course. Working with Mathematics should not be an issue for you.

Note that an online course may need more time commitment than an onsite course.

This course uses WebAssign for Online Homework and  Testing. You are required to purchase the course textbook, which also contains the WebAssign Access Key; this Key is only found in the textbook.  See the section "Required Educational Materials" on the course syllabus for specific details (check the "Syllabus" link here in Blackboard). Please make sure to read the syllabus thoroughly!

In addition to the syllabus, here in BB you will also find the "Schedule" and a "Course Material Guide" for each math unit that you will study in this course. All these documents will explain how the learning process is structured in this online course. They will give you detailed information on all the course’s requisites...what to do, how, where, and when!

Please print the  Schedule  and post them on a visible place; you will need to refer to these for all tasks and deadlines throughout the term.

All instructional materials used throughout the course, as well as the scheduled activities, support and promote the achievement of the stated learning outcomes and unit learning objectives (check the "Goals" link here in BB).

Since this is an online course, we will communicate mainly via email. When you email me, you must write on the subject "Algebra Online" followed by the nature of your message, so that your email will have priority. All communications should follow appropriate etiquette. Please consult the section “Communication Policies” in the course syllabus.

Now...ready to begin this course? Once you have finished reading this message and browsed through the next files in this folder, please click the icon that says "Your First Assignment (Campus Email Assignment)," for this is your first task. This assignment must be submitted no later than Wednesday of the first week of class!

Please get the required educational materials and start working on your course tasks immediately!

Important:

By the "Program Integrity and Documentation of Online Course Attendance" published by the US Department of Education (ED) and adopted by Valencia College, any student registered in an online course must show attendance during the first week of classes.

The Department of Education has made it clear that simply logging into an online or hybrid course does not constitute attendance as an "academically-related activity."

The way a student shows  attendance in this course is by (1) sending the campus e-mail by the first Wednesday of the term (2) completing the Student Introduction Assignment found if the discussion section in BB, (3) completing the Syllabus Quiz found in BB with 100%, and (4) completing at least one Math lesson and the corresponding Homework assignment (in WebAssign) with a score of at least 80%  by the No-Show deadline.

Caution: If you do not send your campus e-mail (by the first wednesday of the term), I will not know where to send your tests. If you have not logged into BB  posted the Student Introduction Assignment, complete the syllabus quiz, and logged into WebAssign and complete at least a math lesson with at least 80% by the No-Show deadline  (Tuesday of the second  week) of this term, as stated above, you will have not complied with the ED attendance policy, and you will be withdrawn from this course as a No-Show.

Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions. You can email me pfernandez@valenciacollege.edu) or call me (407-582-2755).

Emails will receive a faster response.

Have a great academic term!

I wish you the best with all your classes!
