About This Online Course:

This course is challenging and time consuming. This online course is convenient but NOT easier than a regular classroom course. This method of delivery is NOT intended for everyone. Only highly motivated highly discipline and highly organized students, that can read the book, have time to watch videos, do the tutorials, and that can learn the material by themselves, with limited guidance, are successful in this course. Working with Mathematics should not be an issue for you.  Note that an Online course may need more time commitment than an onsite course. All tests in this course are proctored.

I will not be teaching you the course in the traditional sense, because this is not the purpose of this online course.

If you have issues with mathematics (“Math is difficult for me”, “I am not good at math”, “I hate math”, etc.), this method of delivery is not for you.

Caution: If you need someone to explain to you every concept, this course is not for you, and I suggest you take a classroom course.

Course Description:

MAC 1140 Precalculus Algebra (3 credit hours)

This course is the preparation for the Calculus sequence. Topics include symbolic, graphical and numerical analysis of polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, power and rational functions; matrices, sequences and conic sections. Applications emphasizing connection with other disciplines and with the real world will be included. Technology tools will be utilized in addition to analytical methods.

Note: This course uses symbolic, graphical and numerical approaches to find solutions to the problems. Even though most answers to problems can be found using your calculator, (graphical and numerical approaches) you must learn to find the solutions to problems using the symbolic approach. Half of the exam problems will require symbolic method of solutions to problems.

Unless the problems in the book suggest the use of a calculator, be sure you learn how to solve the problem without using the calculator. That is one of the skills you must develop in this course. I do not want you to just finding answers with a calculator. I want you to learn how to find the solution to problems (all the necessary steps to get to the answer of problems). Since half of the tests will be No-Calculator, if you do all the assigned problems using a calculator, you will not be prepared for the tests.

Teaching Philosophy:

My role is to lead and guide you, and be a facilitator of learning. Since I care about your academic success, I will be providing you a quality-learning environment. In this course you will have the opportunity to learn skills that will be relevant to future courses and  to your professional career.

ONLINE DELIVERY SYSTEM (COURSE PLATFORM)

This course is delivered through Blackboard (BB), and uses MyMathLab (MML) as a tutorial and a testing tool to watch Videos, and do online Homework. To be able to take this course, you must have a computer with internet access and must know how to use one.

Course Access: Blackboard 9.1  (BB = Blackboard 9.1 throughout this document.)

BB course page:      http://online.valenciacollege.edu

Login for BB:          Use your ATLAS Username and Password

BB Guide:              How to navigate in BB. Blackboard 9.1 (BB) Guide for Online Math Courses

Communications:

This is an online course; therefore, we will communicate mainly electronically, via e-mail and through the course site (BB). The only e-mail used in this course is the Valencia e-mail. You must check your Valencia email regularly as to not miss any important messages from the instructor!

You will always use my email address to communicate with me:  pfernandez@valenciacollege.edu

Please remember to include “Precalc” on the subject line of the email, followed by the nature of your message, so that your email will have priority.  To protect my computer from any virus, I will delete without opening any email with no subject. All communications should follow appropriate etiquette. Email should be used in a professional way. Always put identifying information in the subject line so that I know what your message is about. Use appropriate language and include your name so that I know who you are.

If you call my office and wish to leave me a voice mail, please repeat your name and telephone number twice. Since I am not always in my office, an email will have a faster response than a voice mail.

Note: The MML software allows you to create messages and communicate via email with your instructor. You will disregard this feature!

IMPORTANT: Since I will be sending all my communications to your Valencia email account, please remember that you must delete old messages from your mailbox; otherwise, if you exceed the quota, your Valencia mailbox will not accept any more and you will not receive my weekly emails. I have no control of your email account, so please check this regularly.

All emails will receive my response in a timely fashion. You should expect my reply within a 24-hr. period, excluding Saturdays and Sundays. If you have not received a reply from me within this period, probably I have not received your email. Please resend it. If time permits, I will also get back to you during weekends. On the other hand, when you receive any email from me that requires your response, I expect you to reply in a timely fashion as well. Again, I will be communicating with you on a regular basis, therefore, it is crucial that you check your emails frequently, so that you are always on track.

Not checking my emails is not accepted as an excuse for missing required tasks; missed announcements and/or emails may affect your grade and are the responsibility of the student.

 Educational Materials:

bullet  MyMathLab (MML) Access Code  ISBN:1269446363. This code will give you access to the e-book of  Precalculus a Unit Circle Approach, 2nd Ed Ratti-McWaters. This ISBN is not for the book; only the access code.

bullet

Option #1: Buy the  Student Access code at the time you register for the course ($90+) with a Credit card). The Access Code, will give you access to the complete textbook online (e-book) in a PDF format and all the online Homework need for the course.

Option #2: You can also buy the MML Access Code at the East Campus Bookstore ($90 +Tax).

Caution: If you decide to buy the book online, it may come without the MyMathLab packet, and you then will need to buy a MyMathLab Student Access Code. If you have a used Access Code , you will need to buy a new Access Code, because a used access code will not work.

bullet TI-83/83plus/84 or 89 Graphing Calculator. (Some professors require the TI-89 in Calculus)

Note: There is a graphics calculator tutorial in the 'Chapter Contents' tab in MML. There is also a Calculator link in this web site that links to help with different type of calculators.

Valencia Core competencies: TVCA

Valencia faculty has defined four interrelated competencies (Value, Think, Communicate and Act) that prepare students to succeed in the world community. These competencies are complex abilities that are essential to lifelong success. This course will help you develop and demonstrate the abilities to (1) think clearly, critically, and creatively; (2) communicate with others verbally and in written form; (3) make reasoned value judgments and responsible commitments; and (4) act purposefully, reflectively, and responsibly. Due to the nature of these global competencies many problems and activities will be presented in the context of an application. These applications will require students to select appropriate information from the problem and communicate effectively how to arrive at an appropriate solution.

Attendance Policy:

Due to the nature of this online course, on-campus attendance in the traditional sense cannot be enforced. However, the frequency of your visitations to the course sites will be monitored. In the event of an extended absence -that is, not logging onto course sites (BB and/or WebAssign) for more than 3 days, or not replying to my emails in a timely manner (within 48 hours)- you must contact me as soon as possible to indicate the reason for the inactivity. Before the withdrawal deadline, if your absences become extreme (3 days or more), you may be withdrawn from this course for noncompliance with the requisites of the course. If you miss two tests, this is consider excessive absences and you will be withdrawn from the course.

After the withdrawal deadline, you cannot -for any reason- withdraw from this course and obtain a grade of “W.”

Please check the "No-Show" section for more details on online attendance requirements.

Work Requirement:

Instruction in this course does not involve classroom lectures.  You will learn the material by reading the sections watching the videos and doing the problems outlined in the Topics section in BB. All instructional materials used throughout the course, as well as the scheduled activities, support and promote the achievement of the stated learning outcomes and unit learning objectives. You can find the course learning outcomes and unit learning objectives on the BB page.) I will act as facilitator and will guide you in your learning experience.

Accessing the Online Textbook material in MML:

To access the online textbook, login to Course Compass, and go to the Chapter Content (in the left hand side). Select the desired chapter and section in MML. In there, you will find the Watch Videos and the 'Multimedia e-text’ link that contains the book section in a PDF format. All the Multimedia and video lectures are integrated in the e-text.  The 'Tracked Tutorial Exercises' are optional and will not count towards your grade.

Doing Online Homework in MML:

When you are ready to take an online homework, login to Course Compass and in Course Home, select the 'Homework' tab. When you work a problem, make sure to click the save button. You may do the homework as many times as you want (until you get 100%).
Every time you hand in homework, your homework grade will be updated in your Gradebook. It is the student's responsibility to check their Gradebook to ensure that the homework was submitted successfully.

Caution: Trying the online homework before doing the assigned textbook reading will result in wasting many hours of your time in front of the computer without learning the material.

If you do not want to waste your time, the steps to take are: (1) Read the section in the book and work the textbook examples. Your guide should be the topics in the 'Topics' link in BB. (2) Make sure to follow the topics and examples listed in the 'Topics' link, (3) do the online homework and quizzes.

You have learned the material when you can do the homework without referring to the book or your notes.

Remember: In Mathematics "There are no shortcuts".

Taking Online Quizzes in MML:

To take quizzes in MML,  login to Course Compass and in Course Home, select the 'Take a Quizzes & Tests' tab, and select your quiz. Do not hit submit until you have finished all the questions. You can take each quiz two times; the highest score will count. Each section will have multiple choice questions quiz. You will have no time limit to complete each quiz. You will be able to see the answers after the quiz deadline. Every time you do a quiz, your quiz grade will be updated in your Gradebook. It is the student's responsibility to check their Gradebook to ensure that the quiz was submitted successfully. To deal with any computer or technical problem that may arise, you should always take any examination at least one day before the due day.

Deadline for Taking  Online Homework/Quizzes:

There will be homework and quizzes assigned from the book.  Remember that the key for success in this course is to do homework. The dates listed in the 'Schedule' link in BB (see also the calendar in MML) are the last possible day for you to do online homework and take online quizzes.  There will be no extensions under any circumstances for any of the deadlines in this course. MML will not allow you to take an online examination after the deadline. There will be no time limit for online homework. Homework can be taken as many times as you want until you get a perfect score. Quizzes can be taken up to 3 times. I strongly suggest you complete the assigned work at least one day before the deadline. If you wait until the last minute to do the online work, I am not responsible for last minute technical difficulties.

Non Graded Assessment:

The Study Plan, and the Sample Tests and Quizzes  under the Quizzes and Tests tab, will not count toward your grade in the course. You only do those if you feel you require more practice.

Examinations:

There will be online homework and online quizzes for each section covered. There also will be four (4) on-site test (at a Testing Center) and comprehensive (Cumulative) on-site Final Exam. All Tests (excluding the Final Exam) have a take-home part. Those can be found in the 'Assessments (Tests)' link in BB.  On-site examinations will be closed book/ no notes or formulas are allowed on tests.  No formulas will be provided in any of the on-site tests. All on-site tests have to be taken at a Valencia Testing Center, or at a certified proctoring center. There will be no set time limit to take any of the on-site examinations. The onsite examinations can be taken at the Valencia Campus you indicate in your Campus e-mail. If you plan to take examinations outside Valencia, you must inform me, and you must follow the instructions found at the Proctoring link. You do not need to make an appointment to take tests at any of the Valencia Testing Centers. All you need to do is to show-up with your Valencia ID, your calculator, and a pencil. Students living in the vicinity of one of the Valencia Campuses must take the tests at Valencia.

You must take each test after completion of the computer Homework and quizzes and after studying the "Topics and Concepts section in BB.  Tests must be taken according to the schedule. You can take the tests at any time on or before the deadline date, but never after! If you miss one test, the final exam will replace that missed test grade.  If you miss any two tests, for any reason, only one tests will be replaced with the final exam I. You will obtain a zero on the other test. The final exam cannot be worth more than two test grades (200 points).

Important: Since the tests have problems from a test bank, you can only see your tests in my office after the tests deadlines. I will be glad to discuss your test performance during my office hours. I cannot give you a copy of the tests for you to review. You can only review your test performance in my office after the test deadline, and before the due date of the next test. Allow one hour to discuss your test performance during my office hours.

Taking your MAC 1140 Take-Home Part of Tests:

You may take any Take-Home part of the tests from your home computer; no password is needed. The tests will be submitted electronically via Blackboard. Once you have logged in, under the course menu, you will find each test by clicking the folder “Assessments (TESTS).” Take-home part of tests must be completed by 11:59 PM (E.S.T.), no later than the specified deadline indicated on the Schedule.

There will be a 120-minute time limit for each take-home parts tests. Problems not answered within the time limit will be counted as incorrect. As you answer each question, I suggest that you save your answer after each problem you have completed. By doing this, if the power goes out you will not lose your work. Even if you save your answers, you can go always go back and change them. Make sure you select “Save All Answers,” and click on “Save and Submit.” Immediately, the computer will give you the test score. Make sure you are using the Firefox Browser, and the computer has the latest Java installed before login to your test. If any other browser is used, or an old Java is installed, some problems may not show up, and you will miss the attempt. If you use a Tablet to take the test (iPad, Samsung Galaxy, exc.), some pictures will not open. Remember that you only have one attempt at the test. You must complete the Take-Home part of a Tests in one session. Once you open the Take-Home part of the test, you must complete it. If you open and close the Take-Home part of the tests, you will not have access to it again. Under no circumstance, you will be allowed to continue with the Tests once you open and close the test. When taking a test, you are responsible of making sure that your test is submitted in BB. If you do not receive a score at the end of your test, your test was not submitted.

Taking your MAC 1140 Testing Center part of Tests (Proctored):

The the onsite examinations in this course will be submitted electronically via BB at the testing center. At the testing center, you will login to BB http://online.valenciacollege.edu/ with your login name and password. Once you have logged in, under the Course Content you will select “Assessments (Tests),” found in the left-hand side, where you will find both the Take-Home  and Testing Center parts of the tests. When you open the Testing Center part of the test, the program will ask for a password. The testing center personnel or proctor will type a password for you. Make sure the proctor is using the Firefox Browser, and the computer has the latest Java installed before login to your test. If any other browser is used, or an old Java is installed, some problems may not show up, and you will miss the attempt.  All Testing Center examinations  are closed book/notebook. No notes or formulas are allowed.

In the Testing Center examination you will be allowed to use paper and pencil for calculations, of course. The testing center will provide the scratch paper, which will be collected.

Again, you cannot take Testing Center examination from home. However, you can take the tests (at the testing center) at any day/time that is convenient to you, no later than the specified deadlines.

As you answer the test questions, I suggest that you select “Save answers” after each problem you have completed. By doing this, if the power goes out you will not lose your work. Even if you save your answers, you can go always go back and change them. Once you finish this part, make sure you select “Save all Answers,” and click on “Save and Submit.” If you do not select Save and Submit, your test will not be sent and graded. After you submit your test, the computer will give you the test score for that part. If you do not see your score, you have not properly submitted your test.

All the tests have no time limit. I recommend that you allow at least two hours to take each test (two hours or more). Again, since there is no time limit, there should be no reason to leave any question unanswered because you ran out of time.

When taking a test, you are responsible of making sure that your test is submitted in BB. If you do not receive a score at the end of your test, your test was not submitted. Should you have any technical difficulties while submitting your test, you must alert a Testing Center staff member immediately! The Testing Center specialist must contact me and explain any technical problems encountered. Make sure that this procedure is strictly followed; if the Testing Center specialist does not corroborate the problem, you will receive a score of zero if the test is not submitted properly.

It is your responsibility to inform me immediately via e-mail of any issue you encounter when taking tests. The issue must be informed in writing so that there is written evidence.  Informing me afterwards is not an acceptable excuse.

The deadline specified in the Weekly Schedule is the last day you have to take both versions of each test. If you wait until the last minute to take a test, I am not responsible for last minute technical difficulties at your selected testing center, including, but not limited to: accessibility to a computer, availability of BB, availability of Internet connection, etc. To avoid this, I recommend that you take a test days before the due date. A test will always be available the day after the deadline of a previous test; so plan accordingly.

When taking tests, it is strictly forbidden to go to any website or check e-mails. Doing this will be considered Academic Dishonesty, resulting in getting an F in the course with an Academic Dishonesty note in your transcript.  All computer screens, at the testing center are constantly monitored from the sign-in desk. Schedule your test-taking dates and times efficiently! I am not limiting you when taking tests, so please do not limit yourself.

At any time, you can see your tests grades in the 'My Grades' tab in BB.

At any time, you can find your course average by finding the quiz/homework grade in MML. Now, average this grade with the other test grades. That will be your course average at that time.

Taking your MAC 1140 Final Exam Test:

The Final Exam is a one part test and must be taken at the Testing-Center. The Final will be submitted electronically via Blackboard the same as any other test in this course. At the testing center, the proctor will provide a password for the Testing-Center Part of the Final Exam. The last day for taking the test is on Monday, April 25, 2016.

Caution: Some campuses have limited hours, or change their hours of operation without notice during the final exams period. I recommend that you call them before taking your tests. Again, not knowing the hours of operation of your chosen testing center will not be accepted as an excuse for missing the Final Exam, or not having enough time to complete it!

You are responsible of making sure that your test is submitted. It is your responsibility to inform me immediately of any issue you encounter when taking tests. Informing me afterwards is not an acceptable excuse.

Valencia ID Cards:

Valencia identification cards are required for the Testing Center and Valencia's student support services, including the Library.  No other form of ID at those locations will be accepted. Possession and utilization of a Valencia ID is mandatory in order to obtain these services. Your student ID card can be obtained in the Security office on any Campus once you have registered and paid for your classes. The first student ID card is free. There is a $5 fee for a replacement card. Not having an ID is not an excuse for missing a test!

General Notes:

When you use a computer there is a possibility technical problems like computer crashes, power outage, corrupted plug-ins and a down system. Plan to do the homework quizzes and take the tests early, before the deadline, so that you will have time to fix technical difficulties that may arise. Technical problems are not an excuse for missing any computer work. If you are having problems with your computer you can access this course on any other computer. Every time you use a different computer remember, you must install and check all the plus-ins. If you encounter a problem, is most likely because you do not have the computer and internet requirements, you do not have the plug-ins correctly installed, your plug-ins are outdated, your pop up blocker is on, you have other programs opened in the background or you have a CD/DVD in your CD/DVD drive. If this is not the case, you can call MML Technical support at 1-800-677-6337 (M-F 8AM-5PM CST).

Grades:

There will be a total of six (6) grades in the course. An Online homework/quiz grade from MML (one grade), four (4) on-site tests (one grade each) and an on-site Final Exam (one grades). Your course grade will be the average of those 6 grades.  Test problems are similar to homework problems and examples in the book. The book homework is not collected or graded. Similar problems will show-up on tests.

The final grade for this course will be derived from the following sources:

Test#1 (Take-home and Testing Center parts)                       100 points  (Testing center part is a No-Calculator part)

Test#2 (Take-home and Testing Center parts)                       100 points   (Testing center part is a No-Calculator part)

Test#3 (Take-home and Testing Center parts)                       100 points   (Testing center part is a No-Calculator part)

Test#4 (Take-home and Testing Center parts)                       100 points   (Testing center part is a No-Calculator part)

Online quizzes and online homework                                     100 points   (50 points quizzes/50points online homework)

Final exam (Take-home and Testing Center parts)                100 points    (Testing center part is a No-Calculator part)

The grading scale is as follows:

A 90-100%     B 80-89%       C 70-79%       D 60-69%       F Below 60%

What it takes to earn each grade:

   A      600-540 points

   B      539-480 points

  C      479-420 points

   D      419-360 points

   F       359-0 points

Borderline policy:

If your course average is borderline (that is, 89, 79, 69, 59) after taking the final exam, your average will go up depending on the average of all your test grades (4 tests and the final, including any final exam adjustment). If the average of your tests grade is higher than the borderline score, you grade will go up. If your average is the same or lower than your borderline score, you grade will stay the same. To find if you are eligible to go up, find the average of your tests. If this average is higher than your borderline score of 89, 79, 69 or 59, you will "go up". Otherwise, you will stay at your current grade.

Make-Up Policy:

NO make-up tests will be given. If you miss a test, the final exam’s score will replace that missed test grade. If a test grade is replaced with the final exam grade, the final exam will count double. The final exam cannot be worth more than 2 grades (200 points). Only one test can be replaced per academic term. If you miss any two tests, for any reason, you can only replace one test score with the Final Exam score. The other test score will be zero. No Exceptions.

Note: If you do not miss any test, the Final Exam score will replace your lowest test score if it is to your advantage (the Final Exam score is higher than your lowest test grade)

It is never advisable to miss a test because you do not feel prepared.

Extra Help:

In addition to receiving help from your instructor, you should try to attend your respective campus math support area. The tutoring services provided by Valencia's math support centers will help you clarify course content. You can work on any specific Precalculus question and you can also get help with your required homework problems. All Valencia’s math support centers are very helpful.

Rules and Tips for Taking Tests at the Testing Center:

You will need at least 2 hours to complete each math test. Whether you are taking your tests at East Campus or at another Valencia Campus, you are responsible for finding out their hours of operation.

Here is a link to Valencia's Testing Centers. It provides information on their locations, contact information, and hours of operation: http://valenciacollege.edu/testingcenter/.

Valencia identification cards are required for the Testing Center and Valencia's student support services. No other form of ID at those locations will be accepted. Possession and utilization of a Valencia ID is mandatory in order to obtain these services. The Valencia ID can be obtained at the Campus Security Office of your campus. Call for details. Click on this link for their contact information:  http://valenciacollege.edu/studentdev/centers.cfm Not having an ID is not an excuse for missing a test!

* Do not bring food or beverages to the testing center.

* Cell phones and other electronic devices must be turned off and stowed away during testing. If your phone or any electronic device rings, you will be asked to stop testing and sign out, and you will miss the opportunity you have to take the test. Ouch! Do not let this happen to you!

* All memory and programs should be erased from your calculator before taking tests.

* Allow enough time to take a test. The Testing Center will not give a test the last hour before closing (for example, if the Center closes at 9:00 p.m., the last test is given out at 8:00 p.m.); it will not give a Final Exam within two hours of closing.

* In addition to these rules, your instructor’s test policies will apply.

Academic Honesty:

All students are expected to be in complete compliance with Valencia College’s policies on academic honesty; see the Valencia College website for details on this policy: Academic Policies and Procedures). Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to: plagiarism, cheating, furnishing false information, forgery, alteration or misuse of documents, misconduct during a testing situation and misuse of identification with intent to defraud or deceive. In no instance will dishonesty of any type be tolerated in this course. Students who violate any of Valencia’s academic honesty policies will risk penalties that can go from receiving a grade of “F”  in the course (with a 'Dishonesty' note in the transcript) to expulsion from the college. The professor reserves the right to determine the appropriate penalties within the aforementioned policies.

Student Code of Conduct:

Valencia College is dedicated not only to the advancement of knowledge and learning but is concerned with the development of responsible personal and social conduct. By enrolling at Valencia, a student assumes the responsibility for knowing and abiding by the rules articulated in the Student Code of Conduct, 6Hx28:10-03; students are required to see the Valencia Catalog for full details (here is a link to Valencia's Catalog: http://valenciacollege.edu/catalog/). The primary responsibility for managing the classroom environment rests with the faculty.  Students who engage in any prohibited or unlawful acts that result in disruption of a class may be directed by the faculty member to leave the class. Violation of any classroom or Valencia’s rules may lead to disciplinary action up to and including expulsion from Valencia. Disciplinary action could include being withdrawn from class, disciplinary warning, probation, suspension, expulsion, or other appropriate and authorized actions. In addition, Valencia College strives to provide a drug-free learning environment for all those involved in the academic experience.

Policy: In compliance with the provisions of the Federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act of 1989, Valencia College will take such steps as are necessary in order to adopt and implement a program to prevent the unlawful possession, use, or distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol by Valencia College students or employees on college premises or as part of any college activity. The student code of conduct applies to the online classroom environment as well.

Withdrawal:

If you decide to withdraw from this course, you must follow the proper Valencia procedure.  Students should familiarize themselves with Valencia Community College’s withdrawal policy.

The withdrawal deadline for this term is found in the Important Dates section of the syllabus. Per Valencia Withdrawal Policy (4-07), a student cannot withdraw and obtain a grade of W after this deadline. After this deadline, students will only receive a letter grade of A, B, C, D or F. Again: No W grade can be given after the withdrawal deadline.

No-Show Policy!

Caution: The US Department of Education requires online students to show attendance by submitting homework during the first week of classes. To comply with this Federal law, you must successfully complete assignments by the second Tuesday of the term. Successfully completing assignments means to:

(1) Send me the Campus e-mail by the first Wednesday of the term. Your e-mail (1) must come from your Valencia e-mail, (2) have "Precalculus Online" in the subject, (3) have the Campus you are taking tests.
If one of the above is missing, you will have not complied with this assignment.

(2) Complete the Student Introduction assignment, found in the "Discussions" section in BB, by the second Tuesday of the term,

(3) Complete - with 100% - the Syllabus Quiz, found in BB, by the second Tuesday of the term. You can take the Syllabus Quiz as many times as you want until you get 100%

(4) Complete at least one Online Homework in MML. with a score of at least 80%, by the second Tuesday of the term.

Any student that does not comply with this Federal requirement will be dropped from the course as a No-Show.

Note:  The Syllabus Quiz score will not count towards your final average in this class; however, this quiz is a class requirement, and is one of several factors that validate your attendance to this online course within the No Show policy.
