Common Learning

Consider the things you enjoy & know something about - - your hobbies & interests. You may know something about cooking, or basketball, or the words to songs by Massive Attack, or how to defeat a stage boss in Half-Life, or how to get from your job to West Campus in under twenty minutes.

These things had to be learned.

You weren't born knowing them.

And although they took concentration, study, & practice to master, you probably wouldn't say the effort was boring.

You might even say this learning is fun.

We could call this kind of learning "Informal" learning (like informal dress: jeans and tee shirt), but I'd rather think of it as Common Learning because it happens every day . . . to all of us.

When we look at the experience of learning, why not look at common learning first?
