Score 4-4 Essay

There are many things in life that we take for granted. Having a home to live in is a privilege that not everyone has. An organization called, Habitat for Humanities, was set up in 1981, by founder Robert Hall. His intentions were to provide less fortunate families with homes to live in, free of cost. Habitat for Humanities has built over 1000,000 homes with the help of average people donating money or helping out with labor. I'll explain to you how to donate money, how to help out by donating your time to help with labor, and how you would apply to receive a home for your family. Together, many families this year will have a place to sleep.

There are several ways to share your money with habitat for Humanities. You can go online at www.HabitatforHumanities.org and donate immediatly. Another option is through the mail. Habitat for Humanities has hundreds of people who send their donations in yearly. Also, you can find a buisness, such as Romano's Macaroni Grill, who has set up fund raisers a few times a year. At Romano's Macaroni Grill, you can find a donation box that stays on display year round for guests to donate. They also have their employees create and design neck ties. The employers wear their ties until a guest decides to buy them. There is a minimum of ten dollars, per tie, when guest decide to donate. All profits go directly to Habitat for Humanities. Romano's Macaroni Grill, in Kissimmee , raised over three thousand dollars this year just in tie sales. This isn't the only buisness that has helped out. Many places, such as Chili's, Winn-Dixie, and Sea World, also contribute.

The homes built come from people who volunteer their leisure time. No money is used to pay for labor. You can also donate tools or supplies, such as hammers, saws, scrap wood, or scrap metal. To join their community service team, just visit the given website. One Saturday a month could make an enormous difference.

Let's say that your someone who needs a home. This is great! That's what Habitat for Humanities is their for. Once you have applied for their valuable service, you must complete a thousand community service hours. This is when you help other people who need a home. I know it sounds like a lot of hours, but remember the home they're willing to give you. Another guideline is keeping the house. You're not allowed to sell or rent the home out. Once you've earned your home, that's where you must stay.

Is there a better valuable service then giving families homes to live in. I don't think so. When you see a homeless person standing on the side of the road shouldn't be the only time you think of how lucky you are to have a warm bed, hot shower, or comfortable couch. These are privilages that we should be thankful for everyday. If you can't afford to donate money, then donate one Saturday a month. Next time you are cleaning out your garage, think of how the things you throw away could build a home.

Comments:

[Grade: 3-3 (522w) This essay follows the traditional five paragraph model and introduces the topic clearly at the end of the first paragraph. The body and concluding paragraph are focused on single topics, and developed well. Sentences are structured well.

One evaluator mentioned the writing was slightly off topic, as the prompt would seem to lead to an essay that looked at "how" or "why" the service of Habitat for Humanity was valuable. This essay uses more of a Process/ model, but this weakness was not enough to lead to a failing evaluation. Other weaknesses include a number of spelling errors and the overuse of the pronoun "you."]
