EL PRETÉRITO

  The preterit tense of the indicative is one of the past tenses in Spanish.  It describes a:

-    COMPLETED action
-    SUDDEN action                
-   ONE TIME action              
-   SPECIFIC action 
-   INTERRUPTIVE action 
-   FIRST PART OF INDIRECT DISCOURSE


CONJUGATION of all regular verbs:

  All AR verbs drop -AR and add the following ending:

Yo   ______ é                      Nosotros ________ amos

  Tú   ______ aste               

  Él   ______ ó                      Ellos   _________ aron

  Ella ______ ó                      Ellas   _________ aron

  Ud.______ ó                      Uds.    _________ aron

 
All ER and IR verbs drop -ER or -IR and add the following ending:

  Tú  _______ iste               

  Él  _______ ió                       Ellos    ________ ieron

  Ella ______ ió                       Ellas    ________ ieron

  Ud.  ______ ió                      Uds.   ________ ieron

 Irregular Verbs:

• All --car ending verbs in the yo form (and only the yo form) end  in qué,  eg: buscar > yo busqué

• All --gar ending verbs in the yo form end in gué, eg: pagar >  yo pagué

• All --zar ending verbs in the yo form end in cé, eg: comenzar > yo comencé
  

• Only the -IR stem changing verbs are irregular in the Él, Ella, Ud. & Ellos, Ellas, Uds.  forms
  
  o > u   (dormir, morir)   eg:  él durmió    ellos dúrmieron

           e > i    (preferir, sugerir, sentir, mentir, pedir, repetir, seguir, conseguir, servir, sonreír, reír, desvestirse,      
                       vestirse, elegir, despedirse)  eg:  él prefirió    ellos prefirieron

• hacer:    hice, hiciste, hizo, hicimos, hicieron

• venir:     vine, viniste, vino, vinimos, vinieron
  

• decir:      dije, dijiste, dijo, dijimos, dijeron
