COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Basic Spanish is a three-credit-hour course. This is a basic course in Spanish providing the student an introduction to the Spanish language and culture through proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The student will also be able to answer in complete sentences, create small dialogues on topics such as: greeting, asking and answering questions, describing self and others, expressing likes and dislikes, describing daily routines and the physical environment, negotiating elements of time, incorporating imperatives and showing a mature attitude toward cultural differences.

ASSIGNMENTS:
All assignments are due on date specified. Assignments are to be in complete sentences. Make-up work will not be accepted except in cases of verified medical or personal emergencies and at the discretion of the professor. Written assignments must be legible (distinctly written). Homework with class participation is 25% of your grade. All students are responsible for securing notes, assignments from a classmate, if absence should occur.  A word of advice: exchange your telephone number with two other students within your class. If you have difficulty with the language seek help in the tutoring center (for more details see attached copy of the tutoring center).

WORKBOOK/LAB:
Student is to do and turn in workbook lessons on due date. This is on test date. Lab worksheets are to be done with the tapes which are available for copying in the LRC (4-104). All students are expected to take a 90 minutes blank tape to the Language Lab for duplication of the master tape that accompany each lesson. ALL STUDENTS SHOULD USE THE LANGUAGE LAB AT LEAST ONE HOUR FOR EVERY THREE HOURS OF CLASS TIME.
                           
CREACIONES:
Student is required to do two creaciones during the semester. The creación is an oral presentation at least two minutes long on any topic the student may wish to discuss. Topic should be approved by professor. The creación is 20% of your grade.  DON'T BE ABSENT, there will not be any make up for the presentations.

TESTS/QUIZZES:
All tests and quizzes will be announced ahead of time for the benefit of the student.  NO MAKE-UP TEST WILL BE GIVEN, instead the lowest test score will be dropped at the end of the session.  FINAL EXAM WILL COUNT 25% OF GRADE.  IN ORDER TO PASS THE COURSE, STUDENT MUST SCORE 65% OR HIGHER ON FINAL EXAM.  There will be a common FINAL examination in the Spanish Department. 

ACADEMIC :
EACH STUDENT IS EXPECTED TO BE IN COMPLETE HONESTY COMPLIANCE WITH THE COLLEGE POLICY ON ACADEMIC HONESTY AS SET FORTH IN THE ADMISSIONS CATALOG AND THE STUDENT HANDBOOK. ANY STUDENT CHEATING ON AN EXAM OR TEST WILL RECEIVE A ZERO ON THE EXAM WHICH CANNOT BE REPLACED BY THE FINAL EXAM SCORE AND THE PROFESSOR AT HIS/HER DISCRETION CAN WITHDRAW THE STUDENT FROM THE CLASS.

GRADING:    
1. Attendance:   Since active participation is necessary in order to improve listening and speaking skills, students will earn points in the area of attendance and class participation. Three ten minutes late arrival will count as an absence. Leaving the class early will count as an absence. Make sure you arrive on time and stay till the end of class period. ALL CELLULAR PHONES AND BEEPERS MUST BE TURNED OFF DURING CLASS PERIOD.

EXTRA CREDIT:
Student may earn extra credit by attending or watching a program pertaining to Latin America or Spain. The student must turn in a one page typed report giving a synopsis. 1 - 3 points will be given depending on the topic. For every 10 points the student will receive 2 points on final grade.
