COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The Intensive Spanish course covers SPN 1000, 1100, and 1101. There are no prerequisites. Students are introduced to Spanish grammar, vocabulary, and composition applying speaking, reading, writing and listening skills. Students will be exposed to different aspects of the Spanish and Hispanic culture and increase awareness and appreciation in the similarities with their own. COURSE OBJECTIVE:
In addition to specific Spanish objectives, the course will also reinforce the following competencies wholly or partially:

ASSIGNMENTS:
All assignments are due on date specified and are to be written in Complete Sentences and on college ruled paper. Make up work will not be accepted except in cases of verified medical or pesonal emergencies and at the discretion of the professor.  Written assignments must be legible.  Homework is 20% of your grade. LATE HOMEWORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.  

WORKBOOK/LAB:
Students are to do and turn in workbook lessons on due date. This is on test dates.  Lab worksheets are to be done with the tapes which are available for copying at the Language Lab 4-104. This is part of the homework grade.  ALL STUDENTS SHOULD USE THE LANGUAGE LAB AT LEAST ONE HOUR FOR EVERY THREE HOURS OF CLASS TIME.


CREACIONES:
Student is required to do two "creaciones" during the semester. The "creación" is an oral presentation at least two minutes long in Spanish on any topic the student may wish to speak on. Topic should be approved by instructor. There will also be one cultural presentation on a Spanish speaking country. This will be in English and the student will have a choice of topic. Orals are 20% of your grade. DON'T BE ABSENT, there will not be any make up for the oral presentations.


TESTS/QUIZZES:
All tests will be announced ahead of time for the benefit of the student. The lowest test grade will be dropped before averaging final grade. Tests are 20% of the grade. NO MAKE UP TESTS UNLESS UNDER EXTREME CIRCUMSTANCES. FINAL EXAM WILL COUNT 20% OF YOUR GRADE. There will be three final exams, one for each level of the course. IN ORDER TO PASS THE COURSE THE STUDENT MUST SCORE 60% OR HIGHER ON FINAL EXAM.

ACADEMIC HONESTY:
EACH STUDENT IS EXPECTED TO BE IN COMPLETE COMPLIANCE WITH THE COLLEGE POLICY ON ACADEMIC HONESTY AS SET FORTH IN THE ADMISSIONS CATALOG AND THE STUDENT HANDBOOK. ANY STUDENT CHEATING ON AN EXAM WILL RECEIVE A ZERO ON THE EXAM WHICH CANNOT BE REPLACED BY THE FINAL EXAM SCORE AND THE PROFESSOR AT HIS/HER DISCRETION CAN WITHDRAW THE STUDENT FROM THE CLASS.

ATTENDANCE:
Due to the makeup of the Spanish Intensive student will be allowed 3 absences per level. After the third absence a warning will be issued. After 5 absences student will be withdrawn from present and following level(s) Three ten minutes late arrival will count as an absence. Leaving the class early will count as an absence. Make sure you arrive on time and stay till the end of class.

GRADING:     Attendance/Participation:     20%


1. Attendance:   Since active participation is necessary in order to improve listening and speaking skills, students will earn points in the area of attendance and class participation. Three ten minutes late arrival will count as an absence. Leaving the class early will count as an absence. Make sure you arrive on time and stay till the end of class period. ALL CELLULAR PHONES AND BEEPERS MUST BE TURNED OFF DURING CLASS PERIOD.

2. Class Participation will be graded as follows, according to whether the student:

90 - 100 A
80 - 89 B
70 - 79 C
65 - 69 D
0 - 64 F




EXTRA CREDIT:
Student may earn extra credit by attending or watching a program pertaining to Latin America or Spain. The student must turn in a one page typed report giving a synopsis. 1 - 3 points will be given depending on the topic. For every 10 points the student will receive 2 points on final grade.
