All question words have a written accent over the stressed syllable.

cómo = how/what
  • cómo + ser = description
    • ex. ¿Cómo es ella?
    • ¿Cómo estás?
    • ¿Cómo te llamas

cuál(es) = which

  • Use cuál(es) + ser when you want to ask which one(s)
    • ex. ¿Cuál es tu mochila?
    • ¿Cuáles son tus clases?
  • Use cuál + de + noun
    • ex. ¿Cuál de las chicas habla español?
dónde = where
  • Asks a location
  • When dónde is used alone answer with en + place
    • ex. ¿Dónde está Lisa? Está en la clase de la profesora Chater.
  • When Adónde + ir is used answer with ir a + place
    • ex. ¿Adónde vas? Voy a la biblioteca.
  • When De dónde is used answer with de + location
    • ex. ¿De dónde eres? Soy de Portugal.
 quién(es) = who
  • Answer with a person
  • Always use he/she form of verb
    • ex. ¿Quién es tu amiga? Mi amiga es Stephanie
qué = what
  • Use qué + ser when you want to ask for a definition or an explanation
    • ex. ¿Qué es una cumbia?
  • Use qué + verbs other than ser
    • ex. ¿Qué comes?
  • Use qué + noun
    • ex. ¿Qué clase tienes
 Por qué = why
  • Asks reasons
  • Answer with porque (because)
    • ex. ¿Por qué está Paul en la biblioteca? Porque necesita estudiar
cuánto/a = how much
  • Cuánto/a + singular noun
    • ex. ¿Cuánto dinero necesitas?
  • Cuánto + verb (costar)
    • ex. ¿Cuánto cuesta el libro?
    • ¿Cuánto cuestan los libros?
  • cuántos/as = how many
  • Cuántos/as + plural noun
  • Asks for quantity
  • ex. ¿Cuántas clases tienes?
cuándo = when
  • Asks for time
    • ex. ¿Cuándo estudias?
