Syllabus 1140 B
Schedule 1140 B

Welcome to the Precalculus Algebra Online Course B Term!

This course only contains the Algebra part of a Precalculus course. It does not contain the Trigonometry part of a Precalculus course.

I am delighted that you have enrolled in my section and I hope that you have a great academic term!

Instruction in this course does not involve classroom lectures. You will learn the course math contents by using your textbook and other math resources that I will provide you throughout the term. This class will require time management and self motivation from you. I will facilitate your learning by helping you throughout the term.

This course is an intensive 6-weeks course. This course is not a short version of a regular 15-weeks  Precalculus Algebra course. This course covers all the material that is covered in a regular 15-week course.

Taking this course requires that you study several hours every day. We will cover an average of several sections per day, several chapters per week and a test every week and a half.

If you do not have time for this course, you should not register in it.

This online course is challenging and time consuming. Keep in mind that this course is more convenient, but it is not easier because it is online. This method of delivery is not intended for everyone. Only highly motivated, highly discipline, and highly organized students that can read the book and can learn the material by themselves, with the instructor's guidance, are successful in this course. Working with Mathematics should not be an issue for you.

Note that an online course may need more time commitment than an onsite course.

This online course uses ‘MyMathLab’, (MML) Addison Wesley’s testing tool over the Internet.  To be able to take this course, you must have a computer, you must know how to use a computer and you should be able to download and install plug-ins, if you plan to use a computer other than the ones in the Mathematics Lab at the East Campus Learning Resource Center. Since this is a Valencia East Campus Course, the computers at the Computer Labs in other campuses may not have the appropriate plug-ins installed.

MyMathLab has a limited tutorial with some videos. Basically you are teaching yourself the material of the course. Our interaction will be mostly through e-mail or by phone unless you come to my office hours.

In addition to the syllabus, here in BB you will also find the "Schedule" and a "Topics" for each math unit that you will study in this course. All these documents will explain how the learning process is structured in this online course. They will give you detailed information on all the course’s requisites...what to do, how, where, and when!

Please print the Schedule and post them on a visible place; you will need to refer to these for all tasks and deadlines throughout the term.

Since this is an online course, we will communicate mainly via email. When you email me, please write on the subject "Precalculus Online" followed by the nature of your message, so that your email will have priority. All communications should follow appropriate etiquette. Please consult the section “Communication Policies” in the course syllabus.

Now...ready to begin this course? Once you have finished reading this message and browsed through the next files in this folder, please click the icon that says "Your First Assignment (Campus Email Assignment)," for this is your first task. This assignment must be submitted no later than Wednesday of the first week of class!

Please get the required educational materials and start working on your course tasks immediately!

Important:

By the "Program Integrity and Documentation of Online Course Attendance" published by the Department of Education (ED) and adopted by Valencia College, any student registered in an online course must show attendance.

The Department of Education (ED) has made it clear that simply logging into an online or hybrid course does not constitute attendance as an "academically-related activity."

The Department of Education requires online students to show attendance by submitting homework during the first week of classes. To comply with this Federal law, you must successfully complete assignments by the second Tuesday of the term. Successfully completing assignments means to:

(1) Complete the Student Introduction assignment, found in the "Discussions" section in BB,

(2) Complete -with 100%- the Syllabus Quiz found in the Assessments (tests) section in BB, and

(3) Complete  with a score of at least 80% the first Assignment in MML called RU-Ready for Precalculus.

Also, you must send the Campus e-mail. Your e-mail (1) must come from your Valencia e-mail, (2) have "Precalculus Online" in the subject, (3) have the Campus you are taking tests. If one of the above is missing, your e-mail will be return, and you will have not complied with this assignment.

Any student that does not comply with this Federal requirement will be dropped from the course as a No-Show.

Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions. You can email me pfernandez@valenciacollege.edu) or call me (407-582-2755). Emails will receive a faster response. Have a great academic term!

I wish you the best with all your classes!
