Valencia Core competencies: TVCA

Valencia faculty has defined four interrelated competencies (Value, Think, Communicate and Act) that prepare students to succeed in the world community.  These competencies are complex abilities that are essential to lifelong success. This course will help you develop and demonstrate the abilities to (1) think clearly, critically, and creatively; (2) communicate with others verbally and in written form; (3) make reasoned value judgments and responsible commitments; and (4) act purposefully, reflectively, and responsibly.  Due to the nature of these global competencies many problems and activities will be presented in the context of an application.  These applications will require students to select appropriate information from the problem and communicate effectively how to arrive at an appropriate solution.

Attendance:

Attendance will be taken every day. Regular attendance and class participation are significant factors that promote success in this course. Students are expected to attend every class and  be punctual   Students are responsible for all class materials and any announcement made in class whether or not you are present.  Students with  3 unexcused absences will be withdrawn from the class. Please let me know if you have to be absent.

Tardiness:

All classes start at the time indicated on your class schedule. Being late to class or leaving early is a disruption and is discourteous to the students and your professor. Students to persist on being tardy or leaving early will be dealt with on an individual basis. Please let me know if you have to be late or leave early.

Class Participation:

Students are encouraged to participate actively and ask pertinent questions during class. Courtesy will be observed at all times.

Homework:

Completion of homework is crucial to the student’s success in this course. Homework problems must be worked in a dedicated notebook neatly and in order.  To be successful in the class it is important  to spend considerable amount of time working the homework assignment before attending the next class period. Failure to do so will result in you falling behind.  It is suggested that you discuss ideas and homework with other students. Worked-out solutions for each problem must be shown, not just the final answer.

Examinations:

There will be 4 in class tests and an optional comprehensive final. All tests are comprehensive with emphasis of the most recently completed material. There will be weekly quizzes.

Test problems are similar to homework problems, examples on the book and/or examples worked in class. Each tests will count as one (1) grade each, and quizzes count as one (1) grade.  The comprehensive Final can replace your lowest test grade (excluding the quiz grade). There will be a total of 5 grades. Your grade will be the average of 5 grades.

Grades:

There will be a total of five (5) grades, in the course. A Quiz grade, and 4 on-site tests (one grade each). Your course grade will be the average of those 5 grades.  Test problems are similar to homework problems and examples in the book/notes.

The grading scale is as follows:

A  90-100%     B  80-89%       C  70-79%       D  60-69%       F  Below 60%

Borderline policy:

If your course average is borderline (that is, 89, 79, 69, 59), your average will go up depending on the average of your test grades. If the average of your tests grade is higher than the borderline score, you grade will go up. If your average is the same or lower than your borderline score, you grade will stay the same. If you are borderline, you must take the final, if you want the opportunity to go up.

Make-ups:

NO make-up tests will be given. If you miss a test, the final will replace that missed test grade. Only one test can be replaced per academic term. If you miss two tests, for any reason, only one test will be replaced with the final.

Academic Honesty:

All students are expected to be in complete compliance with Valencia College’s policies on academic honesty. Here is a link for details on this policy: http://valenciacollege.edu/generalcounsel/policy/documents/Volume8/8-11-Academic-Dishonesty.pdf
