This syllabus is a contract between the student and the instructor. By attending this course, the student agrees to the terms and conditions of this contract. It is the responsibility of the student to carefully read this syllabus/contract, and to adhere to all policies and procedures within.

About This Hybrid Course:

A Hybrid course is an Online course with an in-class required component. Although most of the learning activities will take place online, if you have registered for this hybrid class, you must attend on-campus weekly scheduled meetings.  The in-class part of this course is not designed to cover new material. These meetings are not intended to be formal lectures; instead, students will be expected to have previously studied the assigned material, completed the required homework sections, and come prepared to participate in individual and group activities. During these in-class meetings, you will turn-in and take quizzes.

This course is challenging and time consuming. This online course is convenient but NOT easier than a regular classroom course. This method of delivery is NOT intended for everyone. Only highly motivated highly discipline and highly organized students, that can read the book, have time to watch videos and do the tutorials, and that can learn the material by themselves, with limited guidance, are successful in this course. Working with Mathematics should not be an issue for you. You must have a solid background in Precalculus and Trigonometry to take this course. I suggest you consider not taking this online course if you obtained a C in either Precalculus or Trigonometry. Do not take this course because it is the only Calculus I course open.

 Keep in mind that this is a 5 credit hours course, and you should spend considerable more time working at it than in a regular 3 credits hours course.

Note that an Hybrid/Online course may need more time commitment than an onsite course. There will be a required orientation on Tuesday January 12, 2012 at the East Campus 4-205 from 10:00 am - 11:15 am. There will be required meetings every Tuesday at the East Campus 4-205 from 10:00 am - 11:15 am.  If you cannot attend the required meetings, you cannot be in this course.

All Tests in this course are proctored and must be taken at the East Campus Testing Center. Calculus is  learned when  it is explained to you (not by just reading a book). Every topic in the course has a video in the MML e-book. To be successful in this course, you must watch all the videos and do all the exercises mentioned in the Topics section in BB.

ONLINE DELIVERY SYSTEM (COURSE PLATFORM)

This course is delivered through Blackboard (BB), and uses MML as a testing tool to watch Videos, and do online Homework.  To be able to take this course, you must have a computer with internet access and must know how to use one.

Course  Description:                       

MAC 2311 Calculus with Analytic Geometry I (5 credit hours)

Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in MAC 1140 and MAC 1114 or MAC 1147 or MAC 1142 or MAC 1132 or MAC 1104 and MAC 1114 or appropriate score on an approved assessment. Topics include circle and parabola, limits and continuity, derivatives of algebraic and trigonometric forms, applications of derivatives, definite and indefinite integral. Gordon Rule course. Minimum grade of C required if MAC 2311 is used to satisfy the Gordon Rule and general education requirements.

Note: This course uses symbolic numerical and graphical approaches to find solutions to the problems. Even though some answers to problems can be found using your calculator, (graphical and numerical approaches) you must learn to find the solutions to problems using the symbolic approach. Most of the pencil and paper exams will require symbolic method of solutions to problems.

Unless the problems in the book (e-book) suggests the use of a calculator, make sure you learn how to solve the problem without using the calculator. That is one of the skills you must develop in this course. I do not want you to just finding answers with a calculator. I want you to learn how to find the solution to a problems (all the necessary steps to obtain the answers to problems).

Warning: If you are planning to take Calculus I and Calculus II, it is important that you do not transfer to a different college between the two courses.  While the total content of Calculus I and II is the same at all area colleges, the order of the topics in Calculus I and Calculus II is not the same at all colleges.  This means that the Calculus I content at one college may differ from Calculus I at another college. Therefore you should not transfer to another college between Calculus I and Calculus II.  After you have completed this two course sequence at a given institution, you should not have any transition problems for the rest of the Calculus sequence.

Teaching Philosophy:

My role is to lead and guide you, and be a facilitator of learning. Since I care about your academic success, I will be providing you a quality-learning environment. In this course you will have the opportunity to learn skills that will be relevant to future courses and  to your professional career.

Communications:

This is an online course; therefore, we will communicate mainly electronically, via e-mail. The only e-mail used in this course is the Atlas e-mail. You must check your Valencia email regularly as to not miss any important messages from the instructor!

Please remember to include “Calculus I” on the subject line of the email, followed by the nature of your message, so that your email will have priority.  To protect my computer from any virus, I will delete without opening any email with no subject. All communications should follow appropriate etiquette. Email should be used in a professional way. Always put identifying information in the subject line so that I know what your message is about. Use appropriate language and include your name so that I know who you are.

If you call my office and wish to leave me a voice mail, please repeat your name and telephone number twice. Since I am not always in my office, an email will have a faster response than a voice mail.

Note: MML allows you to create messages and communicate via email with your instructor. You will disregard this feature!

IMPORTANT: Since I will be sending all my communications to your Valencia email account, please remember that you must delete old messages from your mailbox; otherwise, if you exceed the quota, your Valencia mailbox will not accept any more and you will not receive my weekly emails. I have no control of your email account, so please check this regularly.

All emails will receive my response in a timely fashion. You should expect my reply within a 24-hr. period, excluding Saturdays and Sundays. If you have not received a reply from me within this period, probably I have not received your email. Please resend it. If time permits, I will also get back to you during weekends. On the other hand, when you receive any email from me that requires your response, I expect you to reply in a timely fashion as well. Again, I will be communicating with you on a regular basis, therefore, it is crucial that you check your emails and any announcements via BB frequently, so that you are always on track.

Not checking my emails  is not accepted as an excuse for missing required tasks; missed announcements and/or emails may affect your grade and are the responsibility of the student.

The MML access code ISBN 1269446363. The Access Code, will give you access to the complete  e-book (Calculus by Briggs, Cochran) in a PDF format and all the online Homework need for the course. You can buy online at the time you register, or after the 14 days grace period.

    Caution: If you buy online the access code, make sure the code is new. Old (used) access codes will not work.

Note: You will have a 14 day trial period where you can use MML without having to buy the Access Code. Any work you do during this period will be saved. At the end of this period, you will need to validate the Access Code to be able to continue working.

This course will help you develop and demonstrate the abilities to (1) think clearly, critically, and creatively; (2) communicate with others verbally and in written form; (3) make reasoned value judgments and responsible commitments; and (4) act purposefully, reflectively, and responsibly. Due to the nature of these global competencies many problems and activities will be presented in the context of an application. These applications will require students to select appropriate information from the problem and communicate effectively how to arrive at an appropriate solution.

Attendance Policy:

On-campus attendance

This hybrid course has required weekly class meetings (Tuesdays, 10:00-11:15 a.m.). Students will be expected to have previously studied the assigned material, completed the required homework sections, and come prepared to work on individual and group activities, including weekly quizzes. Students missing 4 or more class periods (3 in a row), will be withdrawn for excessive absences (if this occurs before the withdrawal deadline), or will receive an F in the course (if this occurs after the withdrawal deadline). The penalty will be applied at the discretion of the instructor. It is the student's responsibility to record their attendance by signing the attendance sheet each class meeting; failure to do so will result in an absence. Leaving early without prior permission of the instructor will be treated as an absence.

Off-campus attendance

The frequency of your visitations to the course websites will also be monitored. In the event of an extended absence -that is, not logging onto course sites (Blackboard and/or MML) for more than 3 days, or not replying to my emails in a timely manner (within 48 hours) - you should contact me as soon as possible to indicate the reason for the inactivity. Before the withdrawal deadline, if your off-campus absences become extreme (3 days or more), you may receive an excessive absence notification and may be withdrawn from this course for noncompliance with the requisites of the course.

Work Requirement:

Instruction in this course does not involve classroom lectures. The weekly meetings are intended for individual and group activities, including quizzes. You will learn the material by reading the sections, watching videos, experimenting  and doing the problems in MML outlined in the Topics section in BB. All instructional materials used throughout the course, as well as the scheduled activities, support and promote the achievement of the stated learning outcomes and unit learning objectives. I will act as facilitator and will guide you in your learning experience. I will not be teaching you the course in the traditional sense, because this is not the purpose of this online course. If you need a live person to explain to you the concepts, this course is not for you, and I suggest you take a classroom course.

Assessment and Course Evaluation:

All assessments/evaluation procedures are consistent with the educational activities and will appropriately measure the stated course learning outcomes and unit learning objectives.

    1) Online Homework/ Quizzes:

Online Homework/quizzes can be found in MML. There are also assigned problems (highlighted problems) in the Homework section in BB. Each homework problems in MML can be done until you obtain 100%. Quizzes can be taken  up to two (2) times.  All online work has an 10:00 PM deadline on the day it is due.

Practice Quizzes (with answers) are found in the Topics section in BB. They should be used after you have done the online work and homework. There is one Practice Quiz per section. These quizzes will not be graded. Caution: Only doing the Practice Quizzes may not be enough to learn the material and pass the tests.

Caution: Trying  the online homework/quizzes before doing the assigned textbook (e-book) work will result in wasting many hours of your time in front of the computer without learning the material.

If you do not want to waste your time, the steps to take are: (1) Read the section in the book (e-book) and watch the videos. (2) Make sure to follow the topics and examples listed in the 'Topics' link, (3) do the online homework. Remember that you are responsible for the assigned homework in the Homework link in BB that is not assigned online. See the Homework Link in BB.

You have learned the material when you can do the  homework without referring to the book or your notes.

Remember: In  Mathematics "There are no shortcuts".

    2) Weekly Quizzes:

Every day we meet there will be an in class quiz. Each quiz will have two-parts: a take home part (usually 1-2 problems) that you turn in at the beginning of class (first 2 minutes of class), and an in-class part (usually 3-4 problems).  Any late homework will not be collected. The in-class part can be given at any time during the class period. Quizzes will count as one grade. All quizzes problems are from material from the previous week whose online homework is already due. If you cannot attend the weekly meetings or cannot be on-time to the meetings, you should not be in this class.

    3) Discussions:

The purpose of the Discussion Board is to provide you with a posting place for mathematics-related information that you can share with each other. There are three types of discussions in the Discussion section in BB. The first one is the required Student Introduction. If you do not this Introduction by the second Tuesday of classes, you will not be in compliance with the Department of Education's attendance policy, and will be withdrawn from the course. The second discussion is the Math Discussion Board. This discussion board is where you post any math related posts. This is an opportunity you have to communicate with other students. The third discussion is the Tests  Discussions. This one will count for grade. The number of questions in this discussion is the same as the number of students in the class. You are required to answer just one question. Since some questions are easier than others, the earlier you start the discussion the better. After the deadline of the Discussion Topic for Test #1, the Discussion Topic for Test #2 will appear, and so on. The deadlines for the Tests Discussions are at 5:00 PM on the deadline. See the Schedule link.

In the Discussion Topics for Tests:

        A) You must answer only one question. If you are not sure if your answer is correct, pick another question. Once a question is answer correctly by a student, that question cannot be chosen by another student. If you think a question is answered incorrectly, you can try to answer the question. If you answer more than one question correctly, you will be penalized. Note: Since a questions cannot be answer by a student after it has been answered by another student, if you answer more than one question, some students will not have questions to answer. A question must be completely answered for credit. No partial credit. To count, all answers must be original. Agreeing with another posting will not count as a posting

        B) Please post at least one question that you have (or had) from any section on the material covered in that specific test .  Answering the required question in part A will not count as a posting.

        C) You must respond to only one posting from another student in part B. Not two student can answer the same question, unless the first student's answer is incorrect. In that case, the first student debate why his answer was correct, or she/he must answer another student's question in part B. You may answer a question posted by another student regarding any of the problems.

        General notes:

        The due day for Discussion Topics postings are found in the course schedule in BB

        You must copy the question in your posting.

        Parts A&B must be made in the same posting with the subject of the posting  (the question number) "# Parts A&B" .

        Part C must be in the same posting of the person you are answering his part B question with the subject "Part C"

       You must answer all parts A, B, and C to obtain full credit.

    4) In-class Participation:

The idea of this course is of a Flipped Classroom. This is an online course with some time during the week to have some structured learning.

The week before, you study the material, do the online Homework/Quizzes, and during our weekly meetings we will go over some of the most challenging concepts of the previous weeks. Our meetings will not consist of formal lectures. We will work in groups, and take an individual quiz of the concepts of the previous weeks. All students must participate during our meetings. You must bring pencil and paper to do your work. I you think you know the material,  please help others to learn it. If you are not willing to participate, you cannot be in this course.

    5) Examinations:

There will be four (4) on-site test and comprehensive (Cumulative) on-site Final test. All Tests except the Final Exam are two-parts tests (calculator/no-calculator). The Final Exam is a no-calculator test. On-site examinations will be closed book/ no notes, pencil and paper test.  All on-site tests have to be taken at the East Campus Testing Center (No Exceptions). There will be no set time limit to take any of the on-site examinations.

You must take each test after completion of the computer Homework and after studying the "Topics"  section in BB.  Tests must be taken according to the schedule. You can take the tests before the deadline date, but never after! Remember that every student must take the final. By Valencia policy, any student that does not take the final will have an F in the course

Important: Since the tests have problems from a test bank, you can only see your tests during the tutoring session or in my office after the tests deadlines. I will be glad to discuss your test performance during my office hours. I cannot give you a copy of the tests for you to review. You can review your tests before the due date for the next test. Allow one hour to discuss your test performance during my office hours.  

Grades:

There will be a total of 700 points or seven (7) grades in the course. 4 on-site tests (one grade each), an Online Homework/Online Quizzes (one grade), an on-site Quizzes/ Discussion grade (one grade), and an a comprehensive Final Exam (one grade). Your course grade will be the average of those 7 grades.  Test problems are similar to homework problems and examples in the book.

The final grade for this course will be derived from the following sources:

The grading scale is as follows:

A  90-100%     B  80-89%       C  70-79%       D  60-69%       F  Below 60%

What it takes to earn each grade:

   A      700-630 points

   B      629-560 points

   C      559-490 points

   D      489-420 points

   F       419-0 points

Borderline policy:

If your course average is borderline (that is, 89, 79, 69, 59) after taking the final exam, your average will go up depending on the average of all your test grades (4 tests and the final, including any final exam adjustment). If the average of your tests grade is higher than the borderline score, you grade will go up. If your average is the same or lower than your borderline score, you grade will stay the same. To find if you are eligible to go up, find the average of your tests. If this average is higher than your borderline score of 89, 79, 69 or 59, you will "go up". Otherwise, you will stay at your current grade.

Taking your tests:

All tests will be taken at the East Campus Testing Center.

All tests are pencil and paper. You must show all your work. Remember that  No Work = No Credit

Allow at least two hours to take each test. The tests have no time limit. All Tests except the Final Exam are two-parts tests (calculator/no-calculator).

The Final Exam is a no-calculator test.

Schedule your test-taking dates and times efficiently! I am not limiting you when taking tests, so please do not limit yourself.

Your test grades will be available one week after the test deadline.

At any time, you can find your course average by averaging  the homework/discussion grade, the Group-work/quiz grade and the other test grades as indicated in the grade section of this syllabus . That will be your course average at that time.

Deadline for Taking Tests and for Online Homework/Discussions:

The dates listed in the 'Schedule' link in BB  are the last possible day for you to take on-site tests and to do the online Homework/Discussions.  If you wait until the last minute to do the online work, I am not responsible for last minute technical difficulties. This includes access to the testing center. There will be no extensions under any circumstances for any of the deadlines in this course. MML will not allow you to take an online examination after the deadline. There will be no time limit for online homework. You can do the online HW until you score 100%. Online quizzes can be taken up to 2 times. I strongly suggest you complete the assigned work at least one day before the deadline.

Working online problems:

You must work all the problems neatly in a dedicated notebook. You must show all the steps when working the problems. That will prepare you when taking tests. In the tests, I will grade the solution of the problems, not just the answers.

Make-Up

NO make-up tests will be given. If you miss a test, the final exam’s score will replace that missed test grade. If a test grade is replaced with the final exam grade, the final exam will count double. The final exam cannot be worth more than 2 grades (200 points). Only one test can be replaced per academic term. If you miss any two tests, for any reason, you can only replace one test score with the Final Exam score. The other test score will be zero. No Exceptions.

Extra Help:

In addition to receiving help from your instructor, you should try to attend your respective campus math support area. The tutoring services provided by Valencia's math support centers will help you clarify course content. You can work on any specific Calculus I question and you can also get help with your required homework problems. All Valencia’s math support centers are very helpful.

This Valencia website provides links to video tutorials created by Valencia math professors. The videos use a variety of technologies, and all simple to view. This link will take you there: http://valenciacollege.edu/math/liveScribe.cfm  (Copy and paste the link to your browser if needed.)

Once you are on the website, you only need to look for the course Calculus I and it will take you to specific videos for this class. VERY HELPFUL SITE!

Extra Credit:

You can do the each problem in the online homework until you score 100% and online quizzes up to two (2) times. You can replace your lowest test grade with the final exam grade. Consider this to be your Extra Credit. There will be No Extra-Extra Credit. Please do not ask for any additional Extra Credit.

General Notes:

When you use a computer there is a possibility technical problems like computer crashes, power outage, etc. Plan to do the homework /Postings early, before the deadline, so that you will have time to fix technical difficulties that may arise. Technical problems are not an excuse for missing  any computer work. If you are having problems with your computer you can access this course on any other computer. If you encounter a problem, is most likely because you do not have the computer and internet requirements, your pop up blocker is on, you have other programs opened in the background or you have a CD/DVD in your CD/DVD drive. If this is not the case, you can call Technical support. 

Computer/Equipment Use Policy:   Use of computers at Valencia College is restricted to those activities designated by the instructor to enhance the class materials. Any other use is strictly forbidden. Inappropriate use includes, but is not limited to:

Use of computer to send E-mail or access Internet sites not specifically assigned in class.

Use of computer for job, internship, homework or other activities not assigned in class.

Modifying any hardware or software system configuration or setting.

Activities not in accordance with the Valencia Student Code of Conduct

Use of computers in the departmental open lab is limited to those activities involved with preparing homework or coursework in this department and is subject to the same restriction as listed above.

Computer use is remotely monitored; any student using computers inappropriately may be subject to dismissal from class or banishment from the lab. Subsequent offense may be sent to the campus administration for further disciplinary action.

Rules and Tips for Taking Tests at the Testing Center:

You will need at least 2 hours to complete each math test.  You will be taking your tests at East Campus Testing Center. You are responsible for finding out their hours of operation.

Valencia identification cards are required for the Testing Center and Valencia's student support services. No other form of ID at those locations will be accepted. Possession and utilization of a Valencia ID is mandatory in order to obtain these services. The Valencia ID can be obtained at the Campus Security Office of your campus. Call for details. * Do not bring food or beverages to the testing center.

* Cell phones and other electronic devices must be turned off and stowed away during testing. If your phone or any electronic device rings, you will be asked to stop testing and sign out, and you will miss the opportunity you have to take the test. Ouch! Do not let this happen to you!

* All memory and programs should be erased from your calculator before taking tests.

* Allow enough time to take a test. The Testing Center will not give a test the last hour before closing (for example, if the Center closes at 9:00 p.m., the last test is given out at 8:00 p.m.); it will not give a Final Exam within two hours of closing.

* In addition to these rules, your instructor’s test policies will apply.

Academic Honesty:

All students are expected to be in complete compliance with Valencia College’s policies on academic honesty; see the Valencia College website for details on this policy: Academic Policies and Procedures). Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to: plagiarism, cheating, furnishing false information, forgery, alteration or misuse of documents, misconduct during a testing situation and misuse of identification with intent to defraud or deceive. In no instance will dishonesty of any type be tolerated in this course. Students who violate any of Valencia’s academic honesty policies will risk penalties that can go from receiving a grade of “F”  in the course (with a 'Dishonesty' note in the transcript) to expulsion from the college. The professor reserves the right to determine the appropriate penalties within the aforementioned policies.

Student Code of Conduct:

Withdrawal:

If you decide to withdraw from this course, you must follow the proper Valencia procedure.  Students should familiarize themselves with Valencia Community College’s withdrawal policy. 

The withdrawal deadline for this term is found in the Important Dates section of the syllabus. Per Valencia Withdrawal Policy (4-07), a student cannot withdraw and obtain a grade of W after this deadline. After this deadline, students will only receive a letter grade of A, B, C, D or F. Again: No W grade can be given after the withdrawal deadline. 

No-Show Policy!

Important: The Department of Education requires online students to show attendance by submitting homework during the first week of classes. To comply with this Federal law, you must successfully complete assignments by the second Tuesday of the term. Successfully completing assignments means to:

(1) Complete the Student Introduction assignment, found in the "Discussions" section in BB,

(2) Complete -with 100%- the Syllabus Quiz found in the Assessments (tests) section in BB, and

(3) Complete, with a score of at least 80%, the first Assignment in MML called RU-Ready for Calculus.

Any student that does not comply with this Federal requirement will be dropped from the course as a No-Show.

Note:  The Syllabus Quiz score will not count towards your final average in this class; however, this quiz is a class requirement, and is one of several factors that validate your attendance to this online course within the No Show policy.

 

Important Dates:

Course Completion:

Students enrolled in the same college-level course at Valencia more than two times shall pay the full cost (100%) of instruction fee (you will have to pay out-of-state tuition after your second attempt). Please see a  counselor or advisor if you must repeat a course for the third time.
