About This an Online Course:

This course is challenging and time consuming. This online course is convenient but NOT easier than a regular classroom course. This method of delivery is NOT intended for everyone. Only highly motivated highly discipline and highly organized students, that can read the book, have time to watch videos and do the tutorials, and that can learn the material by themselves, with limited guidance, are successful in this course. Working with Mathematics should not be an issue for you. You must have a solid background in Precalculus and Trigonometry to take this course. I suggest you consider not taking this online course if you obtained a C in either Precalculus or Trigonometry. Do not take this course because it is the only Calculus I course open.

Keep in mind that this is a 5 credit hours course, and you should spend considerable more time working at it than in a regular 3 credits hours course.

Note: This online course may need more time commitment than an onsite course. There will be NO required orientation this course.

All Tests in this course are proctored and must be taken at a Valencia Testing Center. Calculus is  learned when  it is explained to you (not by just reading a book). Every topic in the course has a videos in the e-book. To be successful in this course, you must watch all the videos and do all the exercises mentioned in the Topics section in BB.

No-Show Policy!

Important: The Department of Education (ED) requires online students to show attendance by submitting homework during the first week of classes. To comply with this Federal law, you must successfully complete the following assignments:

(1) Send the Campus e-mail by the first Wednesday of the course. (No Campus e-mail = No test for you)

(2) Complete the Student Introduction assignment, found in the "Discussions" section in BB, by the Second Tuesday of classes

(3) Complete the syllabus Quiz with 100%, by the Second Tuesday of classes

(4) Complete, with a score of at least 80%, the Assignment in WebAssign called RU-Ready for Calculus , by the Second Tuesday of classes.

Any student that does not comply with this Federal requirement will be dropped from the course as a No-Show.

Note:  The Syllabus Quiz score will not count towards your final average in this class; however, this quiz is a class requirement, and is one of several factors that validate your attendance to this online course within the No Show policy.

ONLINE DELIVERY SYSTEM (COURSE PLATFORM)

This course is delivered through Blackboard (BB), and uses WebAssign as a testing tool to watch Videos, do online Homework and take Tests. To be able to take this course, you must have a computer with internet access and must know how to use one.

Course  Description:

MAC 2311 Calculus with Analytic Geometry I (5 credit hours)

Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in MAC 1140 and MAC 1114 or MAC 1147 or MAC 1142 or MAC 1132 or MAC 1104 and MAC 1114 or appropriate score on an approved assessment. Topics include circle and parabola, limits and continuity, derivatives of algebraic and trigonometric forms, applications of derivatives, definite and indefinite integral. Gordon Rule course. Minimum grade of C required if MAC 2311 is used to satisfy the Gordon Rule and general education requirements.

Note: This course uses symbolic numerical and graphical approaches to find solutions to the problems. Even though some answers to problems can be found using your calculator, (graphical and numerical approaches) you must learn to find the solutions to problems using the symbolic approach. The Testing-Center part of the exams will require symbolic method of solutions to problems.

Unless the problems in the book (e-book) suggests the use of a calculator, make sure you learn how to solve the problem without using the calculator. That is one of the skills you must develop in this course. I do not want you to just finding answers with a calculator. I want you to learn how to find the solution to a problems (all the necessary steps to obtain the answers to problems).

Warning: If you are planning to take Calculus I and Calculus II, it is important that you do not transfer to a different college between the two courses.  While the total content of Calculus I and II is the same at all area colleges, the order of the topics in Calculus I and Calculus II is not the same at all colleges.  This means that the Calculus I content at one college may differ from Calculus I at another college. Therefore you should not transfer to another college between Calculus I and Calculus II.  After you have completed this two course sequence at a given institution, you should not have any transition problems for the rest of the Calculus sequence.

Teaching Philosophy:

My role is to lead and guide you, and be a facilitator of learning. Since I care about your academic success, I will be providing you a quality-learning environment. In this course you will have the opportunity to learn skills that will be relevant to future courses and  to your professional career.

Communications:

This is an online course; therefore, we will communicate mainly electronically, via e-mail. The only e-mail used in this course is the Atlas e-mail. You must check your Valencia email regularly as to not miss any important messages from the instructor!

You will always use my email address to communicate with me:  pfernandez@valenciacollege.edu

Please remember to include “Calculus I” on the subject line of the email, followed by the nature of your message, so that your email will have priority.  To protect my computer from any virus, I will delete without opening any email with no subject. All communications should follow appropriate etiquette. Email should be used in a professional way. Always put identifying information in the subject line so that I know what your message is about. Use appropriate language and include your name so that I know who you are.

If you call my office and wish to leave me a voice mail, please repeat your name and telephone number twice. Since I am not always in my office, an email will have a faster response than a voice mail.

Note: WebAssign allows you to create messages and communicate via email with your instructor. You will disregard this feature!

IMPORTANT: Since I will be sending all my communications to your Valencia email account, please remember that you must delete old messages from your mailbox; otherwise, if you exceed the quota, your Valencia mailbox will not accept any more and you will not receive my weekly emails. I have no control of your email account, so please check this regularly.

All emails will receive my response in a timely fashion. You should expect my reply within a 24-hr. period, excluding Saturdays and Sundays. If you have not received a reply from me within this period, probably I have not received your email. Please resend it. If time permits, I will also get back to you during weekends. On the other hand, when you receive any email from me that requires your response, I expect you to reply in a timely fashion as well. Again, I will be communicating with you on a regular basis, therefore, it is crucial that you check your emails and any announcements via BB frequently, so that you are always on track.

Not checking my emails  is not accepted as an excuse for missing required tasks; missed announcements and/or emails may affect your grade and are the responsibility of the student.

Online Instruction Delivery System (Course Platform):

To be able to take this course, you must have a computer with Internet access and -of course- must know how to use it. This course is delivered via Blackboard and WebAssign. You will complete your online homework using WebAssign, and take all your tests via Blackboard.

Valencia Core competencies: TVCA

Valencia faculty has defined four interrelated competencies (Value, Think, Communicate and Act) that prepare students to succeed in the world community. These competencies are complex abilities that are essential to lifelong success. This course will help you develop and demonstrate the abilities to (1) think clearly, critically, and creatively; (2) communicate with others verbally and in written form; (3) make reasoned value judgments and responsible commitments; and (4) act purposefully, reflectively, and responsibly. Due to the nature of these global competencies many problems and activities will be presented in the context of an application. These applications will require students to select appropriate information from the problem and communicate effectively how to arrive at an appropriate solution.

Attendance Policy:

The frequency of your visitations to the course websites will also be monitored. In the event of an extended absence-that is, not logging onto course sites (Blackboard and/or WebAssign) for more than 4 days, or not replying to my emails in a timely manner (within 24 hours) - you should contact me as soon as possible to indicate the reason for the inactivity. Before the withdrawal deadline, if your off-campus absences become extreme (4 days or more), you may receive an excessive absence notification and may be withdrawn from this course for noncompliance with the requisites of the course.

Work Requirement:

Instruction in this course does not involve classroom lectures. You will learn the material by reading the sections, watching videos, experimenting  and doing the problems in WebAssign outlined in the Topics section in BB. All instructional materials used throughout the course, as well as the scheduled activities, support and promote the achievement of the stated learning outcomes and unit learning objectives. I will act as facilitator and will guide you in your learning experience. I will not be teaching you the course in the traditional sense, because this is not the purpose of this online course. If you need a live person to explain to you the concepts, this course is not for you, and I suggest you take a classroom course.

Registering into WebAssign

As soon as Webassign opens, you will self-enroll into WebAssign. You will need both a WebAssign Class Key and the WebAssign Access Code to fully access your math lessons and online homework. The access code gives you paid access to the class materials, and the class key places you in the correct class. The WebAssign Access Code can be obtained at the time of registering. There is a 14 day trial period where you can login and work in WebAssign without having to buy an access code. The trial period will end the second Tuesday of the term

This will be your WebAssign Class Key:valenciacollege 1557 8328

The following link will lead you to WebAssign's "Student Quick Start Guide." This guide will provide information about registering/logging into WebAssign, purchasing access code, and viewing assignments:  www.webassign.net/manual/WA_Student_Quick_Start.pdf

For questions on the content of a particular homework assignment or any math related questions, you will email me at pfernandez@valenciacollege.edu, not WebAssign support.

Technical Notes:

You will submit all required online homework assignments and Tests for this course via WebAssign. Therefore, make sure that your computer does not block your access to WebAssign.

(1) Pop-ups

You need to turn off your computer's pop-up blockers when you are working on your homework assignments. Below are links to instructions on how to disable common pop-up blockers:

Internet Explorer's pop-up blocker

Safari and Firefox on Mac Pop-up Blocker

Firefox's pop-up blocker

Google Chrome's pop-up blocker

Google Toolbar's pop up blocker

Yahoo Toolbar's pop-up blocker

 (2) You will also need the latest version of Java. Not having this will prevent the equation editor box to appear, and you will need this to answer some questions. Java is free to download. Get the latest version at: http://java.com

Assessment and Course Evaluation:

All assessments/evaluation procedures are consistent with the educational activities and will appropriately measure the stated course learning outcomes and unit learning objectives.

    1) Online Homework

Online Homework can be found in WebAssign. Each homework problems in WebAssign can be done up to 3 times. All online work has an 11:59 PM (EST) deadline on the day it is due.

Caution: Trying the online homework before doing the assigned textbook (e-book) work will result in wasting many hours of your time in front of the computer without learning the material.

If you do not want to waste your time, the steps to take are: (1) Read the section in the book (e-book) and watch the videos. Make sure to follow the topics and examples listed in the 'Topics' link, (2) do the online homework. You have learned the material when you can do the homework without referring to the book or your notes.

Remember: In Mathematics "There are no shortcuts".

    2) Examinations:

There will be four (4) tests and a comprehensive Final Exam. Each test has two parts (a take-home part and a testing-center part).  The comprehensive (Cumulative) final exam is a one part (no-calculator) testing-center exam. Testing center part of tests will be closed book/ no notes .  All testing-center part of tests have to be taken at a Valencia Testing Center, or at a proctoring Center. There will be no set time limit to take any testing-center part of tests. Take-home part of tests, have a 150 minutes time limit. All tests will be taken in WebAssign. Take-home part of tests are timed and you will have only one opportunity to take them. The password to access take-home tests is: onetime.  Once you open the test, you have to take it! Do not email me saying that you opened it by mistake, because to open it, you have to write the password: onetime. Testing-center tests have no time limit, and your proctor will write the password for you.

You must take each test after completion of the WebAssign Homework and after studying the "Topics"  section in BB.  Tests must be taken according to the schedule. You can take the tests before the deadline date, but never after! Remember that every student must take the final. By Valencia policy, any student that does not take the final will have an F in the course

After taking the test, you will obtain your test score.

Note: Students living in the vicinity of one of the Valencia Campuses must take the tests at Valencia.

If you need an alternate Testing Center, please refer to the proctoring Guidelines at

http://faculty.valenciacollege.edu/pfernandez/Calculus/Briggs%20Calculus/proctoring11.htm

Approved testing center can be found at http://www.ncta-testing.org/cctc/find.php

UCF is NOT an  Approved Testing Center.

Taking your MAC 2311 online Take-Home Part of Tests:

You may take any Take-Home part of the tests from your home computer. The tests will be submitted electronically via WebAssign. Once you have logged in, under My Assignment, you will find each test. Take-home part of tests must be completed by 11:59 PM (EST.), no later than the specified deadline indicated on the Schedule.

There will be a 150-minute time limit for each take-home parts tests. Problems not answered within the time limit will be counted as incorrect. Make sure you are using the Firefox Browser, and the computer has the latest Java installed before login to your test. If any other browser is used, or an old Java is installed, some problems may not show up.  If you use a Tablet to take the test (iPad, Samsung Galaxy, exc.), some pictures will not open. Remember that you only have one attempt at the test. You must complete the Take-Home part of Tests in one session. Once you open the Take-Home part of the test, you must complete it. If you open and close the Take-Home part of the tests, you will not have access to it again. Under no circumstance, you will be allowed to continue with the tests once you open and close the test. When taking a test, you are responsible of making sure that your test is submitted in WebAssign. If you do not receive a score at the end of your test, your test was not submitted.

Taking your MAC 2311 Testing-Center part of Tests (Proctored):

The onsite examinations in this course will be submitted electronically via WebAssign at a Valencia testing center. At the testing center, you will login to WebAssign with your login name and password. Once you have logged in, under My Assignments, you will find each test.  When you open the Testing-Center part of the test, the program will ask for a password. The testing center personnel or proctor will type a password for you. Make sure the proctor is using the Firefox Browser, and the computer has the latest Java installed before login to your test. If any other browser is used, or an old Java is installed, some problems may not show up, and you will miss the attempt.  All Testing Center examinations are no-calculator, and closed book/notebook. No notes or formulas are allowed.

In the Testing Center examinations, you will be allowed to use paper and pencil for calculations, of course. The testing center will provide the scratch paper, which will be collected.

Again, you cannot take Testing Center examination from home. However, you can take the Testing-Center part of tests (at a Valencia Campus testing center) at any day/time that is convenient to you, no later than the specified deadlines.

After you submit your test, the computer will give you the test score for that part. If you do not see your score, you have not properly submitted your test.

All the testing-center part of tests have no time limit. I recommend that you allow at least two hours to take each test (two hours or more). Again, since there is no time limit, there should be no reason to leave any question unanswered because you ran out of time.

Should you have any technical difficulties while submitting your test, you must alert a Testing Center staff member immediately! The Testing Center specialist must contact me and explain any technical problems encountered. Make sure that this procedure is strictly followed; if the Testing Center specialist does not corroborate the problem, you will receive a score of zero if the test is not submitted properly.

It is your responsibility to inform me immediately via e-mail of any issue you encounter when taking tests. The issue must be informed in writing so that there is written evidence.  Informing me afterwards is not an acceptable excuse.

The deadline specified in the Weekly Schedule is the last day you have to each test. If you wait until the last minute to take a test, I am not responsible for last minute technical difficulties, including, but not limited to: accessibility to a computer, availability of WebAssign, availability of Internet connection, etc. To avoid this, I recommend that you take a test at least one day before the due date. All tests will be available the first day of classes; so plan accordingly.

When taking tests, it is strictly forbidden to go to any website or check e-mails. Doing this will be considered Academic Dishonesty, resulting in getting an F in the course with an Academic Dishonesty note in your transcript.  All computer screens, at the testing center are constantly monitored from the sign-in desk. Schedule your test-taking dates and times efficiently! I am not limiting you when taking tests, so please do not limit yourself.

Caution: Some campuses have limited hours, or change their hours of operation without notice during the final exams period. I recommend that you call them before taking your tests. Again, not knowing the hours of operation of your chosen testing center will not be accepted as an excuse for missing a test, or not having enough time to complete it!

Taking your MAC 2311 Final Exam Test:

The Final Exam is Testing-Center exam. The Final will be submitted electronically via WebAssign, the same as any other test in this course. At the testing center, the proctor will provide a password for the Final Exam. The Final is a No-Calculator test, and contain 30 problems. The last day for taking the test is on Monday, April 24, 2016.

Grades:

There will be a total of six (6) grades, in the course. A Homework (WebAssign) Grade , 4 on-site tests (one grade each),  and comprehensive Final Exam (one grade). Your course grade will be the average of those 6 grades.  Test problems are similar to homework problems.

Computing your grades:

You can compute, at any time, the grade you have in this course by adding all your scores, including tests and the homework score, and dividing by the total number of points.

At the end of the term your final grade will be computed by adding all your scores, plus the adjustment in the final exam, (reflected in the 'adjustment with the final' column) and dividing by 6.

The grading scale is as follows:

A 90-100%     B 80-89%       C 70-79%       D 60-69%       F Below 60%

Deadline for Taking Tests and for Online Homework

The dates listed in the 'Schedule' link in BB  are the last possible day for you to take on-site tests and to do the online Homework.  If you wait until the last minute to do the online work, I am not responsible for last minute technical difficulties. This includes access to the testing center. There will be no extensions under any circumstances for any of the deadlines in this course. WebAssign will not allow you to take an online examination after the deadline. You can do each online HW up to 3 times. I strongly suggest you complete the assigned work at least one day before the deadline.

Working online problems:

You must work all the problems neatly in a dedicated notebook. You must show all the steps when working the problems. That will prepare you when taking tests.

Make-Up

NO make-up tests will be given. If you miss a test, the final exam’s score will replace that missed test grade. If a test grade is replaced with the final exam grade, the final exam will count double. The final exam cannot be worth more than 2 grades (200 points). Only one test can be replaced per academic term. If you miss any two tests, for any reason, you can only replace one test score with the Final Exam score. The other test score will be zero. No Exceptions.

If you do not miss any test, you can still replace your lowest test grade with he final exam grade if to your advantage (the final replaces a test grade, if the final is higher than your lowest test grade),

Borderline policy:

If your course average is borderline (that is, 89, 79, 69, 59) after taking the final exam, your average will go up depending on the average of all your test grades (4 tests and the final, including any final exam adjustment). If the average of your tests grade is higher than the borderline score, you grade will go up. If your average is the same or lower than your borderline score, you grade will stay the same. To find if you are eligible to go up, find the average of your tests. If this average is higher than your borderline score of 89, 79, 69 or 59, you will "go up". Otherwise, you will stay at your current grade.

Extra Help:

In addition to receiving help from your instructor, you should attend your respective campus math support area. The tutoring services provided by Valencia's math support centers will help you clarify course content. You can work on any specific Calculus I question and you can also get help with your required homework problems. All Valencia’s math support centers are very helpful.

Math Help 24/7:

This Valencia website provides links to video tutorials created by Valencia math professors. The videos use a variety of technologies, and all simple to view. This link will take you there: http://valenciacollege.edu/math/liveScribe.cfm  (Copy and paste the link to your browser if needed.)

Once you are on the website, you only need to look for the course Calculus I and it will take you to specific videos for this class. VERY HELPFUL SITE!

Extra Credit:

You can do the each problem in the online homework up to 3 times. You can replace your lowest test grade with the final exam, and you can take part of your tests at home, Consider this to be your Extra Credit. There will be No Extra-Extra Credit. Please do not ask for any additional Extra Credit.

General Notes:

When you use a computer there is a possibility technical problems like computer crashes, power outage, etc. Plan to do the homework early, before the deadline, so that you will have time to fix technical difficulties that may arise. Technical problems are not an excuse for missing  any computer work. If you are having problems with your computer you can access this course on any other computer. If you encounter a problem, is most likely because you do not have the computer and internet requirements, your pop up blocker is on, you have other programs opened in the background or you have a CD/DVD in your CD/DVD drive. If this is not the case, you can call Technical support.

Computer/Equipment Use Policy:   Use of computers at Valencia College is restricted to those activities designated by the instructor to enhance the class materials. Any other use is strictly forbidden. Inappropriate use includes, but is not limited to:

Use of computer to send E-mail or access Internet sites not specifically assigned in class.

Use of computer for job, internship, homework or other activities not assigned in class.

Modifying any hardware or software system configuration or setting.

Activities not in accordance with the Valencia Student Code of Conduct

Use of computers in the departmental open lab is limited to those activities involved with preparing homework or coursework in this department and is subject to the same restriction as listed above.

Computer use is remotely monitored; any student using computers inappropriately may be subject to dismissal from class or banishment from the lab. Subsequent offense may be sent to the campus administration for further disciplinary action.

Rules and Tips for Taking Tests at the Testing Center:

You will need at least 2 hours to complete each math test.  You will be taking your tests at a Valencia Testing Center. You are responsible for finding out their hours of operation.

Here is a link to Valencia's Testing Centers. It provides information on their locations, contact information, and hours of operation: http://valenciacollege.edu/testingcenter/.

Government ID cards are required for the Testing Center and Valencia's. No other form of ID at those locations will be accepted. A Valencia ID can be obtained at the Campus Security Office of your campus. Call for details. Click on this link for their contact information:  http://valenciacollege.edu/studentdev/centers.cfm. Not having an ID is not an excuse for missing a test!

* Do not bring food or beverages to the testing center.

* Cell phones and other electronic devices must be turned off and stowed away during testing. If your phone or any electronic device rings, you will be asked to stop testing and sign out, and you will miss the opportunity you have to take the test. Ouch! Do not let this happen to you!

* Allow enough time to take a test. The Testing Center will not give a test the last hour before closing (for example, if the Center closes at 9:00 p.m., the last test is given out at 8:00 p.m.). The testing Center will not give a Final Exam within two hours of closing.

* In addition to these rules, your instructor’s test policies will apply.

Academic Honesty:

All students are expected to be in complete compliance with Valencia College’s policies on academic honesty; see the Valencia College website for details on this policy: Academic Policies and Procedures). Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to: plagiarism, cheating, furnishing false information, forgery, alteration or misuse of documents, misconduct during a testing situation and misuse of identification with intent to defraud or deceive. In no instance will dishonesty of any type be tolerated in this course. Students who violate any of Valencia’s academic honesty policies will risk penalties that can go from receiving a grade of “F”  in the course (with a 'Dishonesty' note in the transcript) to expulsion from the college. The professor reserves the right to determine the appropriate penalties within the aforementioned policies.

Student Code of Conduct:

Valencia College is dedicated not only to the advancement of knowledge and learning but is concerned with the development of responsible personal and social conduct. By enrolling at Valencia, a student assumes the responsibility for knowing and abiding by the rules articulated in the Student Code of Conduct, 6Hx28:10-03; students are required to see the Valencia Catalog for full details (here is a link to Valencia's Catalog: http://valenciacollege.edu/catalog/). The primary responsibility for managing the classroom environment rests with the faculty.  Students who engage in any prohibited or unlawful acts that result in disruption of a class may be directed by the faculty member to leave the class. Violation of any classroom or Valencia’s rules may lead to disciplinary action up to and including expulsion from Valencia. Disciplinary action could include being withdrawn from class, disciplinary warning, probation, suspension, expulsion, or other appropriate and authorized actions. In addition, Valencia College strives to provide a drug-free learning environment for all those involved in the academic experience.

Policy: In compliance with the provisions of the Federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act of 1989, Valencia College will take such steps as are necessary in order to adopt and implement a program to prevent the unlawful possession, use, or distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol by Valencia College students or employees on college premises or as part of any college activity. The student code of conduct applies to the online classroom environment as well.

Withdrawal:

If you decide to withdraw from this course, you must follow the proper Valencia procedure.  Students should familiarize themselves with Valencia Community College’s withdrawal policy.

The withdrawal deadline for this term is found in the Important Dates section of the syllabus. Per Valencia Withdrawal Policy (4-07), a student cannot withdraw and obtain a grade of W after this deadline. After this deadline, students will only receive a letter grade of A, B, C, D or F. Student with Disabilities:

Students with disabilities who qualify for academic accommodations must provide a letter from the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) and discuss specific needs with the professor, preferably during the first week of class. The Office for Students with Disabilities determines accommodations based on appropriate documentation of disabilities. The goal at the OSD is to open doors, remove barriers and assist you in any way they can. The key to success is matching your needs to the services provided. Please discuss your individual needs with your instructor. Valencia’s OSD can be found online at http://valenciacollege.edu/osd
