Valencia Core competencies:

Valencia faculty has defined four interrelated competencies TVCA (Think,Value, Communicate and Act) that prepare students to succeed in the world community.  These competencies are complex abilities that are essential to lifelong success. This course will help you develop and demonstrate the abilities to (1) think clearly, critically, and creatively; (2) communicate with others verbally and in written form; (3) make reasoned value judgments and responsible commitments; and (4) act purposefully, reflectively, and responsibly.  Due to the nature of these global competencies many problems and activities will be presented in the context of an application.  These applications will require students to select appropriate information from the problem and communicate effectively how to arrive at an appropriate solution.

Attendance:

Attendance will be taken every day. Regular attendance and class participation are significant factors that promote success in this course. Students are expected to attend every class, be punctual, and complete all assignmentsStudents are responsible for all work presented when they are absent, and responsible for any announcement made in class, whether or not they are present. Before the Withdrawal Deadline, students with more than 3 unexcused absences will be withdrawn from the class for noncompliance with the requisites of the course. After the withdrawal deadline, you cannot- for any reason- withdraw from this course and obtain a grade of “W”. Please let me know if you have to be absent.

Tardiness:

All classes start at the time indicated on your class schedule. Being late to class or leaving early is a disruption and is discourteous to the students and your professor. 2 late arrivals will equal 1 absence. Tardiness may lead to withdrawal from this course! Please let me know if you have to be late or leave early.

Class Participation:

Students are encouraged to participate actively and ask pertinent questions during class. Courtesy will be observed at all times.

Cell Phones, Alarms:

Please turn off these devices before you come to class. They are a distraction and will not be allowed during class time.

Homework:

Completion of homework is crucial to the student’s success in this course. Homework problems are assigned on a regular basis. After each class, you need to spend considerable amount of time working the homework assignment before attending the next class period. Failure to do so could affect your grade in this course. Please keep the homework, neatly organized, in a notebook dedicated to the class. Worked-out solutions for each problem must be shown, not just the final answer.

Evaluation:

There will be 3 in class tests and a comprehensive final. All tests are comprehensive with emphasis of the most recently completed material.  Test problems are similar to homework problems, examples on the book and/or examples worked in class. Each tests will count as one (1) grade each, regular quizzes will count as one(1) grade and the comprehensive Final will count as one (1) grade. There will be a total of 5 grades.

Test problems are similar to homework problems and examples in the book. Grades will be based on 60-69, 70-79, 80-89, 90-100 being D, C, B and A respectively. Students that stop coming to class without withdrawing or do not take the final exam will receive a grade of 'F'.

Extra credit:

You will be able to replace your lowest test grade, (if you have not missed any test) with your Wiley Plus homework grade (if your Wiley Plus grade is higher than your lowest test grade). You cannot replace your quiz grade or final exam grade with your Wiley Plus grade. Only one test grade can be replaced with Wiley Plus. Each problem Wiley Plus can be attempted up to 3 times.

Any student that withdraw before the withdrawal deadline will receive a grade of “W” in the course . After the withdrawal deadline, students cannot- for any reason- withdraw from this course and obtain a grade of “W”. After the withdrawal deadline, the only grade a student can obtain in this course is: (A,B,C,D, or F)

Make-ups:

NO make-up tests will be given. If you miss any tests due to a medical emergency or legal situation, that grade may be replaced by the grade of the final exam only if documentation is received and approved by the instructor. It is the student responsibility to provide such documentation before the next test. If the absence is not justified, the final exam’s score may still replace one missed test, but the highest grade that the student can achieve is an 80 (that is, there is a penalty of 20 points for having missed the test). If a test grade is replaced with the final exam grade, the final exam will count double. Only one test can be replaced per academic term. If you miss two tests, for any reason, you cannot continue with this course.

All students are expected to be in complete compliance with Valencia College’s policies on academic honesty; see the Valencia College website for details on this policy: Academic Policies and Procedures).
