Homework for College Algebra Tues./Thurs. Classes

 

Day 1  (01-08-2008)    Familiarize yourself with the class website and syllabus.

 

Day 2  (01-10-2008)    Section 1.1 do problems 1, 4, 19, 23, 25, 39, 50 AND Section 1.4 do problems 1, 11, 17, 19, 26, 28, 29, 31, 34, 41.  I will collect problem 29 from section 1.4 at the beginning of class on Tuesday January 15, 2008 for a grade.

 

Day 3  (01-15-2008)    Section 1.2 do problems 15, 16, 31, 36, 37, 43, 46, 49, 59 AND Section 1.3 do problems 1, 7, 9, 13, 21, 25, 32, 39, 41.

 

Day 4  (01-17-2008)    Section 1.5 do problems 5, 11, 15, 17, 21, 25, 27, 32, 37, 46, 53, 54.  Be prepared for an in-class quiz next time we meet based on this section.

 

Day 5  (01-22-2008)    Section 1.6 do problems 1, 3, 9, 10, 15 and 17 (use least squares regression on calculator), 31, 33, 35, 37.  I will collect problem 15 from section 1.6 at the beginning of class on Thursday January 24, 2008 for a grade.

 

Day 6  (01-24-2008)    Section 4.1 do problems 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 15, 17, 19, 23, 31, 33, 37, 41.  Review the rules of exponents on your own.  See section pages 743 to 749 for extra help.  Study for the TEST on Monday.

 

Day 7  (01-29-2008)     TEST DAY

 

Day 8  (01-31-2008)     Section 4.1 do problems 43, 47, 51, 55, 57, 59, 61, 63, 65, 69.  Section 4.2 do problems 1, 3, 5, 7, 13, 15, 19. 

 

Day 9  (02-05-2008)     Read the heading entitled "Exponential Equations" in section 4.2 starting at the bottom of page 344.  In particular, read carefully through examples 4, 5, and 6 on pages 345 - 346.  Bring a question about this reading with you to class next time.  In  Section 4.2 do problems 23, 27, 29, 31, 33, 37, 39, 41.  Get caught up with the rest of your HW from Day 8.

 

Day 10  (02-07-2008)   In section 4.3 do problems 1, 3, 5, 11, 15, 21, 23, 27, 29, 31, 37, 39, 45, 50, 53, 55, 57, 61.  I will collect problem 50 from section 4.3 at the beginning of class on Tuesday February 12, 2008 for a grade.  For problem 50, you DO NOT have to include part e) in the work that you hand in.  

 

Day 11  (02-12-2008)   In section 4.4 do problems 7, 8, 10, 15, 17, 18, 21, 23, 25, 27, 33, 39, 43, 46, 49, 61, 64.

 

Day 12  (02-14-2008)   Read ALL of pages 422 - 423 in the text.  In section 5.2 do problems 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 19, 27, 29, 31, 33, 35, 37, 39, 41, 43, 45, 49, 55, 57, 65.  Prepare for a short quiz on Tuesday from section 4.3 or 4.4.  Get caught up will ALL your homework in chapter 4 so far.

 

Day 13  (02-19-2008)   Read the portion of section 4.5 entitled "Doubling Time" starting at the bottom of page 378.  Also read the portion of section 4.5 entitled "Half-Life" starting at the top of page 381.  In section 4.5 do problems 4, 11, 13, 19, 23, 27, 29, and for those feeling ambitious you may do problem 39.

 

Day 14  (02-21-2008)    Read example 4 on page 481 and then do problem 42.  In section 6.1 do problems 3, 11, 12, 17, 21, 23, 25, 31, 33, 42.  Study for TEST 2.

 

Day 15  (02-26-2008)    TEST DAY  Do the HW in section 6.1 as indicated in Day 14.

 

Day 16  (02-28-2008)    In section 6.1 do problems 45, 49, 51, 55.  In section 6.2 do problems 27, 31, 33, 35, 39, 41.  I will collect problem 41 from section 6.2 at the beginning of class on Tuesday March 4, 2008 for a grade.  Note: there should be TWO different answers for part d).

 

Day 17  (03-04-2008)    In section 6.3 do problems 3, 7, 9, 13, 15, 29, 30, 36, 37, 43.  I will collect problem 15 from section 6.3 at the beginning of class on Tuesday March 11, 2008 for a grade.  

 

Day 18  (03-06-2008)    In section 6.4 do problems 1, 3, 5, 9, 13, 33, 35, 45.  For problems 33 and 35 you can solve by substitution i.e. when two "things" are equal to the same "thing" then they are equal to each other.  Remember to do problem 15 from section 6.3.  This is due at the beginning of class on Tuesday March 11, 2008.

 

Day 19  (03-11-2008)    In section 6.5 do problems 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 19, 29, 43, 44, 51, 55, 59.

 

Day 20  (03-13-2008)    In section 2.1 do problems 3, 5, 11, 13, 17, 23, 35, 41, 58, 67.  Study for TEST 3.

 

Day 21  (03-18-2008)    TEST DAY (No Homework)

 

Day 22  (03-20-2008)    In section 2.2 do problems 2, 6, 11, 14, 15, 25, 27, 43, 45, 61, 64.  I will collect problem 43 from section 2.2 at the beginning of class on Tuesday March 25, 2008 for a grade

 

Day 23  (03-25-2008)    In section 2.3 do problems 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 12, 15, 17, 18, 21, 33, 37, 65, 67, 66.  In section 2.6 do problems 1, 3, 5, 9, 11, 12, 21c, 25, 33, 35, 53, 61    

 

Day 24  (03-27-2008)    In section 5.1 do problems 1, 3, 5, 8, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 23, 27, 31, 33, 43.  Enjoy your spring break from school.

 

Day 25  (04-08-2008)    In section 8.1 do problems 1, 3, 5, 27, 30.  You may need to review "how to solve linear systems in two variables" as found in Appendix 5 starting at the bottom of page 736.  I will collect problem 30 from section 8.1 at the beginning of class on Thursday April 10, 2008 for a grade.  To help you with this problem, please read example 3 in this section starting at the very bottom of page 641. 

 

Day 26  (04-10-2008)    In section 8.4 do problems 1, 3, 23, 25, 27.  Study for the Final Exam.

 

Day 27  (04-15-2008)    TEST DAY (No Homework)

 

Day 28  (04-17-2008)    Last day of class.  Study for the Final Exam.
