Homework for College Algebra Fall 2008

 

Day 26  (12-02)    In section 7.4 do problems #1, 13, 15, 17, 21, 23, 26, 29.  For #1 use the equation (distance = speed * time).  For the rest of the problems just find the horizontal and vertical asymptotes.  Don't worry about graphing the functions.

 

Day 25  (11-25)    In section 7.2 do problems #9, 29, 31, 33, 39, 47, 49, 51.

 

Day 24  (11-20)    In section 5.1 do problems #1, 15, 17, 19, 29, 35, 36, 43.  

 

Day 23  (11-18)    In section 2.2 revisit problems #25 and 26, this time write the equations for each graph including any transformations AND state the domain and range of each.  Also from this section, do #44 (extra practice with piecewise defined functions).  In section 2.3 revisit problems #1 through 6, this time give the actual equation for the graph as shown including the transformations.  Also in section 2.3, do problems #19, 22, 33, 34, 35, 37. 

 

Day 22  (11-13)    In section 2.2 do problems #14, 25, 26 (for 25 and 26 find the domain and range for each graph AS SHOWN), 45, 61, 64.  In section 2.3 do problems #1 though 6 but just identify the basic function and state the domain and range for each.  In section 2.6 do problems 1, 3, 4, 39 (sketch by hand instead of part a), 61.  

 

Day 21  (11-06)    In section 2.2 do problems #25, 43, 51.  Study for TEST 3 scheduled for Tuesday covering chapter 6 and section 2.1.

 

Day 20  (11-04)    Read through Example 5 on page 543.  This helps you to review how to use the Quadratic Regression feature on your TI calculator.  In section 6.6 do problems #5, 7, 15, 17, 19, 25, 27.  You can use your calculator for the first two problems.

 

Day 19  (10-30)    In section 6.3 do problems #43, 45.  In section 6.4 do problems #7, 13, 35.  On page 556, solve problem #55.  In section 6.5 do problems #5, 7, 43, 51. 

 

Day 18  (10-28)    In section 6.3 do problems #23, 27, 29, 31.  In section 6.4 do problems #3, 5, 11, 21, 23, 25 and 27 (put into vertex form and make a quick sketch of the graph by hand), 33.

 

Day 17  (10-23)    In section 6.1 do problem #43 (parts a, b, c, f only).  Look for the formula used in this problem at the bottom of page 486.  Important: Revisit #41 on pg. 500 and answer this follow-up question:  Assuming that the trainer only has 100 meters of chain link fence, what is the maximum possible enclosed area of all three pens?  Hint: use the vertex formula.  In section 6.3 do problems #5, 7, 15.  I'm not giving too much HW so you can spend time mastering the techniques of #41 on page 500.  

 

Day 16  (10-21)    In section 6.1 do problems #55, 59.  In section 6.2 do problems #27, 31, 39, 41.  Correction: I had 6.1 but I meant 6.2 (see bold red). 

 

Day 15  (10-16)   In section 6.1 do problems #11, 17, 21, 23, 31, 33, 41, 45.  The last problem, #45 is important.  Read through examples 2 and 3 on pages 128 - 129.  In section 2.1 do problems #5, 9, 17, 41.  When using "extraction of roots" as the book calls it, remember to take both the positive and negative square roots.  

 

Day 14  (10-14)   TEST DAY -- No Homework

 

Day 13  (10-07)   In section 5.2 do problems #5, 9, 11, 13, 29, 31, 33, 35, 37, 39, 41, 43, 45, 49, 65.  Study for TEST 2 to be given on Tuesday October 14, 2008. 

 

Day 12  (10-02)   In section 4.5 do problems #3, 9, 11, 23, 25, 27, 28.  For #23 and #25 do parts a) and b) only.  For those of you who feel ambitious you may want to try #39 on page 389.

 

Day 11  (09-30)   In section 4.4 do problems #7, 8, 15, 21, 23, 27, 33, 37, 39, 46. 

 

Day 10  (09-25)   In section 4.2 do problems #33, 41.  In section 4.3 do problems #1, 3, 5, 11, 15, 21, 23, 37, 39, 45, 53, 55, 57.   

 

Day 9  (09-23)    In section 4.1 do problems #63, 65, 69.  In section 4.2 do problems #1, 13, 19, 23, 27, 31, 39. 

 

Day 8  (09-18)    In section 4.1 do problems #19 (Hint: the initial amount is 100% of the sunlight at the top), 33 (Hint: divide by 12 then raise both sides to the one-third power), 51, 53, 55, 57.  Get caught up with the rest of the HW for Tuesday.    

 

Day 7  (09-16)    TEST DAY  Finish section 4.1 for Thursday.

 

Day 6  (09-11)    Study for TEST 1.  This test will cover sections 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, and 8.1.  In section 4.1, do problems #1, 3, 5, 11, 31, 49, 50, 61.  These problems will be due next Thursday.

 

Day 5  (09-09)    In section 1.2 do problems #17, 18.  In section 1.3 do problems #9, 10 (use the vertical line test).  In section 8.1 do problems #3, 5, 9, 16.  On page 703 do problem #27, 28.  (Hint: x = the number of questions answered correctly and y = the number of questions answered incorrectly).  Get used to using the 2nd TRACE intersect feature of your calculator by solving some HW problems with the calculator instead of pencil and paper. 

 

Day 4  (09-04)    In section 1.2 do problems #27, 31(parts a. and c. only), 35, 45, 59, 68, 71.  In section 1.3 do problems #1, 19 (parts a, b, and c only), 32, 39, 41.  Read the directions for 41 carefully.  You will need to use the TRACE button and the LEFT and RIGHT arrow keys on your graphing calculator.

 

Day 3  (09-02)    In section 1.4 do problems #27, 29.  In section 1.5 do problems #5, 15, 17, 21, 29, 41, 54.  In section 1.6 do #35 (don't worry about what interpolation or extrapolation mean here in the directions).  

 

Day 2  (08-28)    In section 1.1 do problems #19, 25, 39, 50.  In section 1.4 do problems #1, 11, 17, 21, 23, 31, 33, 41.  Be aware that some problems have multiple parts.  For the remainder of the semester, do all parts for an assigned problem unless directed otherwise.

 

Day 1  (08-26)    Familiarize yourself with the class website and print out a hard copy of the syllabus and bring to class Thursday.
