Course Description:  Hands-on laboratory-oriented course. An introductory course in microcomputer hardware and related applications. The course is designed to introduce the student to the operation, support, and troubleshooting of PCs.  Major topics in this course are hardware concepts, troubleshooting, repair, maintenance and support of PCs.  This course will prepare the students for the hardware examination of the A+ certification.

 

Course Prerequisites:  There are no prerequisites for this course

Method of Instruction:  This class will consist of lectures, in-class discussion on course topics, and hands-on computer assignments.

 

Valencia Core Competencies:  Valencia faculty has defined four interrelated competencies (Value, Think, Communicate, and Act) that prepare students to succeed in the world community.  These competencies are outlined in the Course Catalog.  In this course through classroom lecture and discussion, work group projects, and other learning activities, you will further develop mastery of these core competencies.

 

Expected Student Conduct:  Valencia Community College is dedicated not only to the advancement of knowledge and learning but concerned with the development of responsible personal and social conduct.  By enrolling at Valencia Community College, a student assumes the responsibility for becoming familiar with and abiding by the general rules of conduct.  The primary responsibility for managing the classroom environment rests with the faculty.  Students who engage in any prohibited or unlawful acts that result in disruption of a class may be directed by the faculty member to leave the class.  Violation of any classroom or Valencia’s rules may lead to disciplinary action up to and including expulsion from Valencia.  Disciplinary action could include being withdrawn from class, disciplinary warning, probation, suspension, expulsion, or other appropriate and authorized actions.  You will find the Student Code of Conduct in the current Valencia Student Handbook.

 

Grading and Evaluation Criteria:  The final grade in this course is composed of the following:

 

Homework and attendance/participation:           30 percent

Lab Projects:                                                    25 percent

Quizzes:                                                            25 percent

Final Exam:                                                       20 percent

Late work will not normally be accepted but will be handled on a case by case situation.

 

Grade Values:

 

A         90 – 100 percent

B          80 – 89 percent

C         70 – 79 percent

D         60 – 69 percent

F          Below 60 percent

                    

The student is responsible for saving all graded, returned work.  There will be no discussion of grade discrepancies unless the student has a graded copy of the work in question.

 

Class work requirements:  Students should have the correct materials with them in class.  Those students not having textbook, diskettes, or other required materials will lose class work credit, in addition to losing note taking necessary for examinations.  Students who miss a class should check with the instructor for the make up class work assignment.

 

Academic Honesty Policy:  You are expected to do your own work.  Providing information to another students or receiving information concerning quizzes or exams is considered cheating.  The professor reserves the right to determine the appropriate penalties within Valencia Community College academic honesty policies. 

 

CLAST Competencies: Some CLAST competencies will be covered in this class.

 

Computer/Equipment Use Policy:  Use of computers in the Information Technology classrooms at Valencia College is restricted to those activities designated by the instructor to enhance the class materials.  Any other use is strictly forbidden.  Inappropriate use includes, but is not limited to:

 

                Use of computer to send E-mail or access Internet sites not specifically assigned in class.

                Use of computer for job, internship, homework or other activities not assigned in class.

                Modifying any hardware or software system configuration or setting.

                Activities not in accordance with the Valencia Student Code of Conduct

 

Use of computers in the Business Students open lab (Building 2 Room 304) is limited to those activities involved with preparing homework or coursework in the IT or business departments and is subject to the same restriction as listed above.

 

Computer use is remotely monitored; any student using computers inappropriately may be subject to dismissal from class or banishment from the lab.  Subsequent offense may be sent to the campus administration for further disciplinary action.

 

Students with disabilities who qualify for academic accomodations must provide a letter from the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) and discuss specific needs with the professor, preferably during the first two weeks of class.  The Office for Students with Disabilities determines accomodations based on appropriate documentation of disabilities.
