Higher Learning and collegeThe decision to attend college is the decision to accept the challenge of complexity. And that complexity is multiplied by every class taken. A student should not expect that college will be any easier than high school (or a career will be easier than college). The picture of a successful businessperson working from the beach on her laptop is not a picture of a simple life. It is the picture of very complex and perfectly efficient life. In college learning, professors present the knowledge. They can also encourage and offer assistance in becoming more efficient. They cannot, though make a learner more efficient. Efficiency is a personal decision. This is why time management skills, study skills, reading and writing exercises play such an important role in higher education. They are the techniques of efficiency that will not only help a student get through classes, but also develop a career life. A student's goal should be to seek out efficiencies. How can this learning make your life better today? How can you save time? In humanities, reading, or social science classes, the knowledge may help you understand why people do the things they do at work or home. In math or writing classes, the learning may help you deal more efficiently with life problems If nothing else, you may be able to develop easy ways to get class work finished. Many times, in life, being efficient is just getting the job done. |
