Higher Learning and evolutionSoleri defines "Miniaturization" as "a reduction of the physical dimensions of an event; a tighter performance curve." He defines "Complexity" as "how many interactions are being added to a process." Is this the balance of life? Though we cannot "miniaturize" ourselves, we do try to do more and more in less time. Sometimes, it's our desires that make us that way. We want a new car, a new computer, a better home, a new game to be happy. So we agree to longer work hours, assuming we can balance the added complexities. We think we can be more efficient. Of course, the alternative is to want less, to eliminate desires. This is the doctrine of many spiritual movements: to desire nothing. Happiness is then within our reach because it requires nothing. But even in this process, a human must become more efficient at desiring nothing to be happy. Non-desire must be cultivated. |
