Course Description

INTRODUCTION TO TECHNOLOGY FOR EDUCATORS

A course for undergraduate education majors which is designed to establish awareness and proficiency related to productivity tools (word processing, spreadsheet, data base, graphics), multimedia presentation, hardware and software, and contemporary communications systems, such as E-mail and the World Wide Web. This course includes learning activity designed to ensure competence in the basic use of computers. Generally required as a prerequisite for state university teacher education programs in Florida. Check with prospective transfer program on current requirements.

Major Learning Outcomes

 

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will:

·           Know how to develop and present educational projects using a variety of software programs.

·         Be aware of the wide range of available instructional technology tools, which are currently in use in schools throughout the United States and will be available in the near future.

·         Develop an understanding of guidelines for the effective development and appropriate use of instructional technologies.

·         Understand and demonstrate the ability to effectively use and integrate the following instructional technologies: (1) A/V equipment (2) Word Processing Presentation Graphics Software; and (3) World Wide Web.

·

Withdrawal Policy

To withdraw from a course(s) you must access registration on Atlas. Each term, Valencia has two Withdrawal Deadlines: the Withdrawal Deadline for a Grade of W and the Final Withdrawal Deadline. “No Show” Status

Class attendance is required beginning with the first class meeting. If you do not attend the first class meeting, you may be withdrawn from the class as a “no show.” If you are withdrawn as a “no show,” you will be financially responsible for the class and a “W” will appear on your transcript for the course.

* NOTE: Must be taken at an accredited Testing Center such as Valencia’s  East, West, Osceola or Winter Park.  Students outside the Central Florida area must make arrangement at a nearby college  to take tests. This needs to be done within the first two weeks of class. Information should be emailed to your instructor about the contact person and phone number. Charges for proctoring tests are the student's responsibility.

Note: School policy states that you will receive a "WF" (Withdrawal Failing) if you miss the Final.

 

Grading scale:

A = 90 – 100

B = 80 – 89

C = 70 – 79

D = 60 - 69

F = 59 or below

 

Makeup Policy for Examinations and All Other Assignments:

 All tests must be taken on or before dates assigned. The final examination must be taken on the date published for final examination, if not this will result in a grade of “F” for the semester. No makeup tests are available without the explicit consent of the instructor, which will only be granted in cases of documented emergencies per Valencia College Policy.

 

Late Policy

 

All assignments shall be due on the date published in the syllabus under the Tentative Class Schedule. Projects turned in late will be penalized as follows: 10 pts (1 letter grade) for the first week or portion thereof; 20 pts (2 letter grades) for the second week or portion thereof; automatic “0” after 2 weeks late. Exceptions will only be granted in cases of documented emergencies per Valencia College Policy.

 

Expected Student Conduct

 

Valencia College is dedicated not only to the advancement of knowledge and learning but is concerned with the development of responsible personal and social conduct.  By enrolling at Valencia College, a student assumes the responsibility for becoming familiar with and abiding by the general rules of conduct.  The primary responsibility for managing the classroom environment rests with the faculty.  Students who engage in any prohibited or unlawful acts that result in disruption of a class may be directed by the faculty to leave the class.  Violation of any classroom or Valencia’s rules may lead to disciplinary action up to and including expulsion from Valencia.  Disciplinary action could include being withdrawn from class, disciplinary warning, probation, suspension, expulsion, or other appropriate and authorized actions.  You will find the Student Code of Conduct in the current Valencia Student Handbook.

Students with Disabilities

Students with disabilities who qualify for academic accommodations must provide a notification from the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) and discuss specific needs with the instructor, preferably during the first two weeks of class.  The Office for Students with Disabilities determines accommodations based on appropriate documentation of disabilities.  The East Campus Office is located in Building 5, Room 216.

 

Valencia ID cards

Valencia ID cards are required for the Library, Testing Center, and IMC usage.  No other form of ID at those locations will be accepted.  Possession and utilization of a Valencia ID is mandatory to obtain these services.
