Description:

A course for undergraduate education majors which is designed to establish awareness and proficiency related to productivity tools (word processing, spreadsheet, data base, graphics), multimedia presentation, hardware and software, and contemporary communications systems, such as E-mail and the World Wide Web. Generally required as a prerequisite for state university teacher education programs in Florida. Check with prospective transfer program on current requirements..

 

Course Goals and Outcomes:

 

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will:

¥        Know how to develop and present educational projects using a variety of software programs.

¥        Be aware of the wide range of available instructional technology tools, which are currently in use in schools throughout the United States and will be available in the near future.

¥         Develop an understanding of guidelines for the effective development and appropriate use of instructional technologies.

¥         Understand and demonstrate the ability to effectively use and integrate the following instructional technologies: (1) A/V equipment (2) Word Processing Presentation Graphics Software; and (3) World Wide Web.

Lever-Duffy, Judy. Teaching and Learning with Technology , 2nd Edition, Boston: Allyn and Bacon 2004.

Grading:  

5 Homework Assignments worth 5% each (Outlining chapters 1-5)

= 25%

2 Projects worth 15% ea:         (Creating a PowerPoint Presentation; and a Web Page)

= 30%

Midterm Exam

= 15%

Attendance and Participation worth 15%.

= 15%

1 Final Exam worth 15%

= 15%

Homework and Projects:

The homework assignments will include outlining 5 chapters of your textbook Teaching and Learning with Technology . In the first class period we will demonstrate the basic format expected using Microsoft Word.

The Projects will be introduced with a written instruction sheet and in class instructions. The due dates will be listed in the schedule attached to this syllabus. The projects will include creating and presenting:  1) a PowerPoint Presentation; and 2) a Web page using Microsoft FrontPage.

Midterm and Final Exam:  

The examination is comprehensive and includes material from the textbook, software tutorials, and classroom activities. Keeping well-organized notes will ensure successful performance. Practice tests are available on the website

Attendance and Class Participation:  

Regular attendance and class participation are required for successful completion of this course. If you miss more than 3 classes, you will be sent an excessive absence report and may be withdrawn from the class.

Grading Scale

A = 90 - 100

B = 80 - 89

C = 70 - 79

D = 60 - 69

F = 59 or below

 

Due Dates:  All assignments are due at the beginning of class on the assigned date.

Late projects will be reduced by one letter grade for each week late.  Projects will not be accepted if more than two weeks late. 

 Note:  School policy states that you will receive a "WF" (Withdrawal Failing) if you miss the Final.

Academic Honesty: 

Cheating of any kind will not be tolerated on quizzes or exams.  If you are caught cheating, you will receive a "0" for the test along with possible withdrawal from the course.

Withdrawal Deadline:

The Deadline for withdrawal for Spring Term 2006 is March 24, 2006.

Lab Time:

You will find it necessary to put in additional time  (beyond class) to complete assigned projects.  Check for open times that the lab is available.

Supplies:

¥       Computer storage disks (floppies, CDs or Flash Drives)

¥       Folders for homework assignments and projects.
