Adequate Preparation

Learning Outcome 3 (Action Research)

Complete an Action Research Project on the inclusion of arithmetic remediation to increase student success in NUR 1141C.

Based on poor math scores and a need for some guidance from instructors in NUR 1141C, I proposed that a change should be made in the way math is presented in the second semester of NUR 1141C.

Approximately 30% of nursing students come into the program with some math deficit.  Students in Fall 2002 courses are having some difficulty with the structure of the math component. Currently, math is self-paced with reinforcement by faculty.  The assessment test is administered during the first “math” session for the student.  It then becomes the responsibility of the student to note areas of difficulty and address those areas.

Proposed change

Arithmetic test will be given as a take home assignment during the first week of classes.  Students will then grade themselves and have an opportunity to evaluate the need for arithmetic remediation.  Students will turn in the graded test at the next seminar meeting. Faculty will meet with those students who were not successful (those scoring 70 or below) on the math assessment individually to assure that the student is addressing the math deficit.  A prescription for math success will be provided and the student is expected to continue to work with faculty until the Dosage Calculation test at the end of the term.  It is hoped that this deficit will be identified and valued by both the student and the instructor. Early intervention will hopefully lay the foundation for successful completion of the math component of the course.

In addition basic arithmetic principles will be taught during the first seminar.  This is based on the knowledge that most students who have difficulty with dosage calculations do not understand basic principles of arithmetic.   Fractions, decimals and percentages will be reviewed.
