Course Description:

 

Ψ      MAT 0012C is an entry level course in mathematics emphasizing the fundamental mathematics operations with application to beginning algebra.

Ψ      This is the first course in a two course sequence designed to prepare students for first-year college-level mathematics.

Ψ      Significant time will be devoted to connections between mathematics and other academic disciplines and to applications outside education settings.

Ψ      Credits earned in this course do not fulfill any college-level mathematics requirements nor do they apply toward any college-level credit requirements.

Ψ      A grade of "C" or higher is needed for entry into MAT 0024C.

Ψ      THE STUDENT IS EXPECTED TO ATTEND EVERY CLASS, BE PUNCTUAL, AND COMPLETE ALL ASSIGNMENTS.  

Ψ      THE STUDENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL WORK PRESENTED WHEN THEY WERE ABSENT.  

Ψ      THE STUDENT IS REPONSIBLE FOR ANY ANNOUCEMENT MADE, WHETHER OR NOT PRESENT, IN CLASS.

 

EXCESSIVE ABSENCES

 

Ψ      MORE THAN 3 - WITHOUT ADEQUATE EXCUSE MAY RESULT IN WITHDRAWN FROM COURSE. 

Ψ      THE STUDENT IS REQUIRED TO REMAIN IN CLASS FOR THE WHOLE PERIOD, UNLESS PRIOR PERMISSION TO LEAVE EARLY HAS BEEN GRANTED BY THE INSTRUCTOR; IT IS DISRUPTIVE TO DEPART WHILE CLASS IS IN SESSION. 

 

TARDINESS: 

 

Ψ      ALL CLASSES START AT THE TIME INDICATED BY YOUR CLASS SCHEDULE. 

Ψ      BEING LATE TO CLASS IS A DISRUPTION AND IS DISCORTEOUS TO THE PROFESSOR AND THE STUDENTS. 

Ψ      STUDENTS WHO PERSIST ON BEING TARDY OR LEAVING EARLY WILL BE DEALT WITH ON AN INDIVIDUAL BASIS.

 

uNACCEPTED CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR:  

 

Ψ      SIDE-TALKING DURING CLASS TIME, AND DISCUSSIONS THAT ARE IRRELEVANT.

Ψ      LEAVING THE CLASSROOM TO ANSWER CELL PHONES OR CHECK CALLS, CELL PHONES AND BEEPERS SHOULD BE “OFF”.

Ψ      EARLY DEPARTURE WHEN NOT PREVIOUSLY AUTHORIZED.

Ψ      AND unsuitable LANGUAGE WILL NOT BE ALLOWED. 

Ψ      ALL THESE ACTIVITIES ARE INCONSISTENT WITH ACCEPTABLE CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR AND COULD BE GROUNDS FOR DISCIPLINARY ACTION.

 

ACADEMIC HONESTY

 

Ψ      Each student is expected to be in complete compliance with the college policy on academic honesty as set forth in the admissions catalog and the student handbook. 

Ψ      Providing information to another student or receiving information concerning exam content is considered cheating. 

Ψ      The professor reserves the right to determine the appropriate penalties within Valencia Community College academic honesty policies.

Ψ      THE STUDENT WILL PRINT THE QUIZ (THIS WILL BE DONE IN 3-100), DEPENDING ON THE CHAPTERS BEING STUDIED IN CLASS, AND WILL DO ALL THE EXERCISES.

 

Ψ      tHE STUDENT WILL SHOW ORGANIZED WORK ON THE SCRAP PAPER AND THE SOLUTIONS WILL BE WRITTEN ON THE BLANKS PROVIDED IN THE QUIZ.  aNY WORK DONE WITH INK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.  uSE pENCIL AT ALL TIMES.

 

Ψ      WORK HANDED AFTER THE DUE DATE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. 

 

     2.    Tests (2): (50%)

 

Ψ         If A STUDENT IS ABSENT TO A TEST, AN EMAIL

               SHOULD BE SENT TO THE PROFESSOR, BEFORE

              OR ON THE DAY OF THE TEST, EXPLAINING THE

              REASON FOR THE ABSENCE.  

 

Ψ         IF THERE IS A VALID EXCUSE (TO BE DECIDED BY THE PROFESSOR), A MAKE-UP WILL BE TAKEN IN THE TESTING CENTER (1-125).  THIS MAKE-UP SHOULD BE DONE WITHIN THE WEEK OF THE TEST.

 

 

 

4.    FINAL EXAM: Competency Test (20%)

 

 

Ψ      THIS IS THE COMPETENCY TEST (35 PROBLEMS) FOR WHICH THE STUDENT HAS 1HOUR AND 40 MINUTES TO FINISH.  TO PASS, the STUDENT CAN ONLY GET AT MOST 10 INCORRECT PROBLEMS ON THE TEST.  THE FINAL EXAM WILL BE GIVEN ON MONDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2005 FROM 10:30 AM TO 12:30 PM AT 3-105.

 

Ψ      AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER THE PROFESSOR WILL PROVIDE A REVIEW.  THIS REVIEW WILL BE STUDIED IN CLASS DURING THE LAST 2 WEEKS OF THE SEMESTER.

Ψ      THE PERCENT OBTAINED ON THE COMPTENCY test WILL BE USED AS THE GRADE OF THE FINAL EXAM.

 

 

Withdrawal Policy:

 

Ψ      The withdrawal deadline for receiving the non-punitive grade of "W" is nov 4.

 

Ψ      After that deadline, if you withdraw, your average will determine whether you will receive a grade of "WP" or "WF".

 

Ψ      Students who do not take the final exam will automatically receive a grade of "WF".
