MAT 0012C Credit Hours 3 (3,1)

Pre-Algebra

This is an entry level course in mathematics emphasizing the fundamental mathematic operations with application to beginning algebra. This is the first course in a two-course sequence designed to prepare students for first-year college-level mathematics. Significant time will be devoted to

connections between mathematics and other academic disciplines and to applications outside education settings. Credits earned in this course do not fulfill any college-level mathematics requirements nor do they apply toward any college-level credit requirements. A grade of "C" or higher is needed for entry into MAT 0024C. Topics include operations with real numbers, computation and approximation, ratio and proportion, percent, practical geometry, operations with polynomials including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division by a monomial, the solutions of linear equations and inequalities, bar circle and lines graphs, graphing of linear equations, and mathematical communication skills.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The objectives of MAT 0012C will be met by solving problems numerically, graphically, and algebraically. To become fluent in the language of mathematics, students will practice oral communication through individual dialog with professor and written communication in the solution of problems.

The Academic Systems students will use all 4 hours of class time, in either 2-144 or 1-131, for computer access. The lab hour will simply afford you more time to work on the computer. There will not be a separate lab for this course. You are expected to log in 4 hours (200 minutes) per week on the computer.

In this course, through material, discussion, group work, and other learning activities, you will further develop your mastery of these core competencies.

GRADING AND TESTING

The grade for this course will be derived from 4 sources:

1. Average of Tests 50% Grading Scale

2. Evaluates (Computer Work) 25% A 90%-100% D 60%-69%

3. Final Exam 15% B 80%-89% F 0%-59%

4. Homework 10% C 70%-79%

1) Tests must be taken by the scheduled date for full credit, but may be taken earlier. All tests, including the Final, are available in the Testing Center rm. 1-125. You may also take them in class on the due date. An I.D. is required to take a test in the testing center.

2) Homework will be reviewed by professor every week, on an individual basis. Homework questions will be answered for the sections covered the previous week. If you are behind in homework, you may need to go tutoring for help.

3) All Lab EVALUATES must be completed in class. The EVALUATE portion of each section should only be taken once. You must request permission before doing any retakes. Retakes score are not considered for grading calculation, unless previously arranged.

4) Final Exam MUST be done, in testing center, NO LATER THAN the final exam scheduled time of Tuesday, May 4, 2003 from 7 am to 9 am.

TWO TIME RULE

You have two attempts to finish Prep Math. An attempt will count for any semester in which you enrolled for the course unless you withdrew before the Withdrawal deadline . Withdrawal after that date will result in that semester being considered an attempt. If you do not complete this course in two attempts, you will need to complete this work through an adult educational center. Contact the Counseling Department for more information.

You may wish to withdraw from a class or from all of your classes. To withdraw BEFORE the withdrawal deadline (March 26, 2004) you must file a withdrawal form in the Records Office. To withdraw AFTER the WITHDRAWAL DEADLINE, you must file a withdrawal form in the Departmental Office responsible for the class from which you are withdrawing.

The withdrawal grade that you receive in a class once you withdraw will be determined as follows:

If you withdraw, or are withdrawn by the professor for excessive absences or other

reasons, on or before the withdrawal deadline, you will receive a W (Withdrawn).

If you withdraw, or are withdrawn by the professor for excessive absences or other

reasons, after the withdrawal deadline, your professor will assign you a withdrawal grade based upon your academic achievement in the class as of your last date of attendance, as follows:

WP: If you are passing as of your last date of attendance, you will receive a WP.

WF: If you are not passing as of you last day of attendance, you will receive WF.

Each student is expected to be in complete compliance with Valencia’s policy on academic honesty. Any student found cheating on a test will receive a zero on the test. A course grade of WF may be assigned by the professor.

Changes in this syllabus, schedule and or homework assignments may be made at any time by announcement of the professor.

A) If a 90% grade is made ON EACH PART of overview pre-test choose YES to use this as your quiz grade (EVALUATE grade), and you are DONE with this section.

B) If you make less than a 90% ON ANY PART of the Overview, you MUST take the EVALUATE for that section.

C) If you make less than a 70% grade on the overview, you must see me BEFORE you take the EVALUATE.
