Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Reflection

In the area of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, I have produced this professional Action Research Project to compare the results of implementing the active learning notes in a MAT0024C Beginning Algebra course with the results of traditional MAT0024C Beginning Algebra courses.  This is very important to me because my dream would be to expand the usage of my active learning notes.  I started using the notes in my course, and I have found them to be highly successful.  If I want my notes to be used in more classes, at different Valencia campuses, and at other educational institutions, I need to be able to prove to other instructors that the notes make a difference in learning.  I have presented these results at various national and local conventions, and instructors are very hesitant to change without any concrete evidence.  Creating this Action Research is assisting me in collecting evidence to show that my active learning notes can truly help students be successful in MAT0024C Beginning Algebra.  I am fortunate enough to have a very supportive and willing-to-assist faculty on Osceola campus so that, based on initial data, I have been able to expand the use of my active notes to all Summer 2008 MAT0024C sections except for one instructor who does not want to change this change this semester.  This really inspires me to continue my dream of promoting the active learning notes and of sharing them with many others to help students be successful.
