Active Learning Notes Factoring Survey
REFLECTION:
A review of the results of the survey really excites me. I was able to
affect the majority of the students’ learning in a positive way. There was
only 1 Strongly Disagree response out of 38 possible responses on Questions 1
through 5, only 1 Disagree response out of 38 possible responses on Questions 1
through 3, and 2 Diasgree responses out of 38 possible responses on Questions 4
and 5. The majority of the responses fell under Agree and Strongly agree.
Reading through the comments under my favorite part of the active learning
notes, I learned that the students liked the organization, the many examples,
and the clarity of the explanations.
Under the least favorite sections, students commented on wanting more space,
which is a problem that I can address. I also received comments about not
having enough examples or having tricky examples. I will review the examples
in my next course and focus on any examples that may be tricky or too
difficult, but it is reassuring because I did try to provide more challenging
problems for students to work on. I did not want to provide easier examples.
Under the additional comments I like the comment, “Very helpful, Two thumbs
up! :).” This makes me smile. The additional comments were very positive and
showing the notes really helped the students learn the material. The
additional comments also had many comments about the instructor. I feel this
is important and shows that the instructor needs to work well with the active
notes for this to be successful.
Overall, the survey and the analysis of the factoring questions show that
the active notes seem to be helping the students learn the material. Even
though the results for the majority did not show the active notes have a
statistically significant difference, I have learned from the results and the
survey that the notes can be as effective as the textbook. The textbook has an
average price of $150.00 whereas the notes have an average price of $15.00.
Many students, especially at the community college level, have financial
problems. If I can provide an alternative to the textbook that is much cheaper
and just as effective, I feel I have been successful.
Active Learning Notes
Factoring Survey
Thank you for participating in
this survey. Your responses are valuable. Active Learning Notes are the notes
that were used in your MAT0024C Beginning Algebra class for teaching the
material on factoring.

My favorite parts of the active
learning notes were:
|
|
[My favorite part of the active learning
notes is that there organized and are in a packet.I feel that i was never
behind becuase the notes, example, and helpful hints are either on the page
you are working on and or a few pages ahaead no need to look threw a ton of
notes and go threw the book.]
[My favorite part of the active learning
notes were the examples given.]
[I could spend more time listening to the
instructor rather than copying pages of notes.]
[IT HELPS UNDERSTAND BETTER]
[That it is easier to understand than the
actual text book. ]
[It explains what to do step by step.]
[Everything was explained step by step so
there was no way to get lost.]
[It shows step-by-step examples.]
[the simplicity of the notes]
[Examples]
[How well detailed they were on how to
factor.]
[understanding it right off the bat]
[that the problems were broken down to
facilitate the learning and comprehension of how they are worked out.]
[The worksheets were what really helped me
understand factoring.]
[my favorite part was the fact that it took
you step by step on instructing you to learn this material]
[the examples]
[The examples]
[The active learning notes really helped me understand
factoring step by step. I like how they break everything down so you don't
miss non of the steps.]
[step by step solving the problems]
[they were written for me, and had problems
work out and explained step by step]
[That there was a lot of examples and with in
the examples the steps were explainedstep by step. I also liked the fact that
there were a lot of problems to practice with.]
[how they gave alot of examples and alot of
problems to do.]
[I thought they really helped me be able to
go back through and review what I had learned. If there was something I was
sketchy on, I was able to reteach it to myself later. That is very helpful -
as often the book is hard to self teach with.]
[The active learning notes had more problems
than the homework. It reinforces what we know. Sometimes, I doubt myself(on
math problems), but the notes were a great way to apply what we were taught.]
[they were just reallu helpful]
[They were very easy to understand and the
steps were pretty much laid out for me]
[When we can go over the material as a class]
[the break down of the overall leaning]
[everything was already written out. so all
that i needed to do was write the work for the problems. it makes it neater
and easier to understand.]
[There were many examples and step by step
instuctions on how to do some of them.]
[im a visual learner so seeing it on the
board helps.]
[My favorite part of the notes were
everything in the section ,how it thought me alot.]
[Learning what they mean and checking if the
answer was corect. And also writing plenty of them down to memorize them
better.]
[My favorite part of the active learning were
the examples.]
[I really don't have a favorite. Math is not
my strong point.]
[the examples.]
[The active notes helped me understand how to
factor a lot better. I learned more from the notes than from the lecture.]
[That the instructions on how to factor were
there]
[Home quizes]

[I dont have any least favorite part(s) for
active learning notes except, i wish all my classes had them!]
[Honestly I liked everything about them,
there were no dislikes.]
[I need a little more space to add my own
helpful hints.]
[N/A]
[My least favorite part about the active
learning notes is the packets are so big even though they have been condensed
for the student]
[N/A]
[Too much reading to do.]
[Not enough examples for the various types of
problems.]
[the repeat of examples]
[none]
[That there were so many problems to solve.]
[when we have to do homework on it]
[none]
[Nothing in particular jumps out that I did
not like]
[none]
[I think everything was good, good
explanations.]
[I didnt have a least favorite. I strongly
agrred with everything.]
[I liked everything]
[they are not whole punched so I couldn't put
them in my binder.]
[I did not have any least favorites.]
[there were a few steps missing at times, that
if you really didnt know what was next they wouldnt know how to get it.]
[I was working on the homework and when part
of it is due then it is all in one packet. I did not want to give up the
packet to turn the homework in as I needed it for the next homework, and
didn't want my homework to be late.]
[Because Some problems were dificult, I think
it would be helpful to write the steps of what's going on next to the example
lines.]
[none]
[the partner excercises, that really does not
aid us in learning to factor.]
[not enough examples, explained]
[not knowing how to do the tricky examples]
[n/a]
[homework]
[My least favorite part of the learning were
the tricky examples.]
[Nothing]
[My least favorite part of the actibe
learning notes were the written explanations, I found the professors
explanation easier to understand.]
[When I missed class.]
[i didn't have a least favorite.]
[I dont have any disagreements with the
active learning notes.]
[nothing]
[not enough practice]

Additional Comments:

[I belive the active notes helped me learn
the material better. I really enjoy the active notes, and hope maybe one day
all my classes will have them. Very helpful, Two thumbs up! :) ]
[The reason why I liked the notes was because
it stated clearly what we were supposed to do as apposed to writing them
ourselves. It would have been a lot more sloppy if we wrote the notes
ourselves.]
[I like using it.]
[The notes did help, but I just prefer to be
taught directly from the professors notes. Other than that i think the notes
are good because every teacher has a different technique of teaching , so
with the notes they would have to stick with that way of teaching so it would
confuse less students.]
[I liked the way class was taught using this
new tool. Its less writting for us.]
[I like using these notes better!]
[They helped me out when the professor wasnt
there]
[I love Professor's method of teaching.
He starts teaching the rule of the principal first and then shows the meaning
of the principal. I have had many math teachers in the past but never have I
experience a joy of understanding and a love for learning more. Thank you
Professor.]
[N/A.]
[The learning notes are very good but not
great if the instructor does not go over them. Our instructure did thats why
it was easy to learn and understand.]
[I'd like to say he is the fifth teacher to
attempt to teach me factoring and I think I may just finaly have it.]
[i really like the work sheets to practice]
[You should do this to all the chapters.]
[I think we sould have more active learning
notes. = )]
[I think the class is great]
[Prof. is a great proffesor i've
learned a lot of what i once knew but forgot.]
[i liked how it was all written down so i
didnt have to take notes.]
[I thought they were useful.]
[I like refering to a study guide opposed to
my own notes and our book.]
[n/a]
[could use some more tricker examples]
[n/a]
[The instructor is a very good explainer on
the sections. and gives you alot of options to get credit.]
[Alot of pratice are done in this class to
get me prepare.]
[no additional comments]
[None.]
[we should have more active learning notes]
