Help Stan get a Plan

A goal without a plan is just a wish.- Antoine de Saint Exupery

Meet Stan:

Stan just started his college education at Valencia College.  He enrolled at Valencia College because he heard it is, “A better place to start.”  Stan is really excited about starting college.  He enjoys playing sports like basketball, soccer, tennis, and others.

Here are a few steps to help Stan make his education plan:

Step 1) Decide on a career plan for Stan to explore

Step 2) Research the education required for Stan’s career goal

Step 3) Develop an education goal/path for Stan’s career goal

Step 4) Make an education plan to achieve this career goal

Step 5) Make a life plan for the time during this education

Valencia offers many resources to help students plan their college experience.  One of these resources is LIFE MAP.

What is LifeMap?

LifeMap is a student's guide to figuring out "what to do when" in order to complete their career and education goals. LifeMap links all of the components of Valencia (faculty, staff, courses, technology, programs, services) into a personal itinerary to help students succeed in their college experience.

To access LIFEMAP tools:

Log into your ATLAS account:  http://portal.valencia.cc.fl.us/cp/home/loginf

On the left side of the page under the My Atlas tab there is a section called “LifeMap”.  Click on the link below, “Go to My LifeMap”

There are many resources you can use to complete your educational plan such as CAREER PLANNER, MY EDUCATION PLAN, MY PORTFOLIO, MY JOB PROSPECTS, and MY FINACIAL PLANNER.

Step 1) Decide on a career plan for Stan to explore

Stan likes playing sports and helping people be healthy, so he would like to be a physical education teacher in a high school.

The career Stan would like to explore is:  Secondary School Teacher

Check out the LifeMap resources dealing with career planning under:

MY CAREER PLANNER then Click on the SELF tab

What career are you interested in exploring?

Why?

Step 2) Research the education required for Stan’s career goal

Stan knows just deciding what you want to do for a career is not that enough.  Stan needs to research what education it takes to become a physical education teacher.

Check out the LifeMap resources dealing with career planning under:

MY CAREER PLANNER,

Then click on OCCUPATION tab

Then click on OCCUPATION LIST

Here Stan can find out what education options are available for becoming a Secondary School Teacher.

After looking up Secondary School Teacher, check out the various resources available for that career.

What did you learn about the career from:  Click here for additional information?

What did you learn about the career from:  Related Assessments?

What did you learn about the career from:  Related Majors?

After reviewing the information in Related Assessments under Related Valencia Majors which educational option should Stan choose (AA General Studies, AA Pre-Major Education (General Preparation), AA Pre-Major Marine Biology, AA Pre-Major Mathematics)?  Why?

After selecting the educational option for Stan, check out and print a copy of the advising sheet for that option.

Step 3) Develop an education goal/path for Stan’s career goal

An education goal should state the degree that is desired and the path that can be taken to obtain that degree.

To be a secondary school teacher it requires further education beyond Valencia College.  Stan lives in Orlando, Florida and would like to complete all of his education in Orlando, Florida.  So Stan has decided he would like to go to the University of Central Florida.

Check out the University of Central Florida’s website at:

http://www.ucf.edu/  Click on perspective students

Then Under Colleges and Degrees click on Undergraduates Major

Look at the information under Undergraduates Major.  If Stan would like to be a Physical Education Teacher, which Undergraduate Major should he choose?  Why?  Print the undergraduate major information.

Knowing that Stan will attend Valencia College then the University of Central Florida, write a specific educational goal statement for Stan stating which degrees he should pursue at each institution.

Step 4) Make an education plan for Valencia College

An education plan is a semester by semester plan of courses where special attention is paid to prerequisites and all special requirements.

Use the information you have gathered in Steps 1 to 3 to prepare a semester by semester course plan to complete a degree at Valencia College.  A helpful tip would be to look at the Valencia College advising sheet and look at the University of Central Florida major information.

For general and pre major requirements at Valencia College use the following link:          http://valenciacollege.edu/aadegrees/premajors_list.cfm

Step 5) Make a life plan for the time during this education

A life plan is a plan for paying for your education and supporting yourself during your education.

How will Stan pay for this education and support himself considering he is not independently wealthy?  Remember Stan will have to pay for his education, a place to live, car, insurance, food, among other expenses.  Please address all of these issues.
