To solve this problem:

First, get the y ‘s on the same side by subtracting y from both sides:

5y + 3 – y = y - 6 – y  >>>>  4y + 3 = -6

Then subtract 3 from both sides:  4y + 3 – 3 = -6 – 3 >>> 4y = -9

Then divide both sides by 4:  4y/4 = -9/4.     The answer is:
