HEAR the voice of the Bard,

Who present, past, and future, sees;

Whose ears have heard

The Holy Word

That walk'd among the ancient trees;

                                                       William Blake (1757-1827)

COURSE GOALS:

The aims of this course are (1) to establish the significance of the Romantic era in the history of English literature,  (2)  to determine any correlation between Romantic poetry and English culture or history of the period, and (3)  to explore the themes and styles of the poets themselves.  Through our readings, we will discuss the relevance of such a genre, and we will focus on how we, as a modern audience, identify with the poems of  Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley, and Keats. Students will become familiar with the rhetoric of versification and the application of diverse critical approaches.
